Chapter 8

I screw around the loft all day, getting the guest room ready for the impending visit of my brother and my sister in law. I went food shopping, which I hate, but I knew Vivian would want to cook for us on Saturday morning. Besides that, I work out extra hard, yet again, because I wouldn’t be able to this weekend. We were going to Foxwoods, and I wasn’t sure if the hotel had a gym since Hunter was the one making all of the arrangements.

At 5:45 in the evening, my brother walks into the loft with his wife in tow. I was sitting on the couch reading Sports Illustrated when they arrive. I glance up, silently watching as Noah does a double-take when he sees me.

“Damn, you look much better since I last saw you.”

I smile and stand up to hug Vivian. She was always beautiful; even at forty, she looked like she was in her twenties. Rory really was the spitting image of her except for the blue eyes that my brother and I also shared.

“Your treadmill and weights are being put to good use,” I inform Noah after pulling away. “I needed to get back in shape.”

“You did in a short time; it’s been less than two months.”

“I work out a couple of hours a day. It gives me something to do.”

We chat for a while about trivial things, and then Vivian goes to take a shower. It gives me a chance to speak with Noah alone, so I take out a couple of bottles of Killian’s and open them, handing him one.

“I need to talk to you,” I begin anxiously.

“That doesn’t sound good. What’s up?”

“I met someone.”

“Anyone, I know?”

“As a matter of fact, yes. It’s Olivia.”

“Olivia, who?”

“Adams, Lexi’s best friend.”

“Really? Where did you meet her?”

“Come on, Noah. You didn’t think I was going to seclude myself from Lexi because you two broke up, did you?”

“I didn’t expect you to. We get along, so I don’t have an issue. So you met her at Lexi’s place?”

I shake my head. “She works for Zane. I invested in Eltech, and she works there. I think I always wanted to date her, but then I met Cassie, and you know the rest.”

He cranes his neck and looks towards the hall bath, which causes me to frown. “She’s hot. Lexi had a lot of hot women around her,” he whispers.

“Yeah? I think Vivian is pretty hot.”

“She is, but we’re talking about Lexi.”

“No, we’re talking about Olivia. Anyway, we sort of slept together.”

Noah’s eyes widen. “You slept with her? What happened to you’ll never go out with anyone else?”

“It just happened. I’m still very attracted to her. Only I had a horrible dream where Cassie accused me of cheating. I slipped out of Olivia’s bed like a jerk. Then I made up an excuse about how I didn’t feel well. I feel so guilty.”

“Brother, you need to talk to someone.”

“I did, I am. I went to a bereavement group last week.”

“Just last week? I think it’s supposed to be a continuous thing. You can’t just go one time and get all your guilt and self-loathing out of your system.”

“I plan on going again, but what am I going to do with Olivia?”
