Chapter 5

Everyone is sitting down to dinner when we arrive. Unlike me, Olivia has a standing order at the front desk, so she is never stopped. Since I’m with her, they let us both pass without hassle.

After we’re let into Lexi’s place, we greet everyone; and it’s a pleasure to meet Megan’s fiancé, Chase, and son, CJ. The only two seats available are next to each other, and I hold Olivia’s for her before I take my own. A look passes between Lexi and I. I know what she’s thinking—that it might be the start of something, but I’m not so sure I’m ready.

Dinner, similar to my last visit, is pizza and pasta. After everyone has their fill, the men end up in the living room, so I follow their lead.

“So, Lucian, I hear you got a bit of a thing for Olivia,” JC says.

I scrub my face with my hands, then make sure Olivia isn’t around. “Lexi told you?”

“Yep, and I think it would be nice if you two got together.”

“How do you feel about it if it meant having my brother around?”

“Noah’s not that bad,” Hunter offers.

“Yeah, but there is some bad blood where he’s concerned.”

“Not so. Lexi told me she holds no ill will towards Noah. They already spoke about it since we’ll all be together for a couple of weeks. Hunter and Rory never had an engagement party, so before we got together, we thought it best that any grievances got aired out.”

“Noah never said anything to me.”

“It just happened on Monday. They talked for over two hours. Neither wants Rory to be upset on her big day.”

“I’m glad it’s all worked out.”

We talk for a few more minutes about the wedding until the ladies call us for dessert. I once again take my seat next to Olivia, and this time, sit close enough where my knee is touching hers. She does not attempt to pull away, but rather, touches me. As she squeezes my knee, electricity goes through me, making me shiver.

I seriously don’t know what I’m doing, and my stomach knots. I feel out of place, but my urge to want to kiss Olivia resurfaces. The talk that I had with Lexi put some of my feelings in perspective. Cassie wouldn’t have wanted me to be alone. She said so before she died. I don’t really want to be alone either, but I never considered I would find someone worthy compared to her memory.

As soon as we finish dessert and the night winds down, I ask Olivia if she would like to go for a walk. The night is warmer than it’s been, and I knew that she lived in the same building that Megan had previously. It’s not a far walk, and neither is my apartment. She agrees, and we head out.

Once we hit the street, I’m torn between holding her hand and not. I’m not quite sure if she would accept it, but she makes up my mind for me when she grabs mine. Her hand is small and gets lost in my big paw. But I hold it tightly as we walk along, pulling her closer.

“Lucian, are you okay with this?”

I nod. “I’m more than okay.”

We walk along, enjoying the weather and sounds of the city. When we get to her building, she asks if I want to come up for a cup of coffee. I debate whether I should or not, but my silence is telling.

“It’s alright if you say no,” she says. “I thought you might want to hang out for a little while.”

“You know what, sure.”

When we enter her apartment, I take in as much as I can. It’s neat as a pin. It’s an open floor plan with gleaming dark wood floors and a kitchen and living area combo. During a brief tour, she shows me her large master bedroom, a smaller guest room, and a hall bath. She must like the color blue because each room is painted in one shade or another. The hallway and living room walls are decorated with retro art—the kind you would find on t-shirts.

“Nice place. I like the art.”

“Thanks. I grab an interesting piece when I find it.”

As she shows me some more pieces, it dawns on me that I’m still holding her hand. The overwhelming urge to kiss her beautiful lips is hard to hold back, and as we’re walking down the hallway, I take a chance. I pull Olivia to me, cradling her head with one hand, and softly kiss her warm, full lips. She immediately responds in kind, her hands snaking into my hair as her tongue probes my mouth.

I can feel myself immediately harden. I haven’t been with a woman in two years, and I rarely masturbate, but I can’t help but keep my lower body angled away so as not to scare her. But it’s no use. The press of her curves against me makes me tighten my arms around her. She moans into my mouth, and a rush of fear causes me to wrench my lips off hers.

She looks at me, confused. “Lucian?”

“I’m sorry,” I barely get out, “I have to go. I need to get out of here.”
