I have to make a stop along the road to the lake. I’ve been nauseous for miles, and even though I only had a few crackers to calm my morning sickness, they didn’t help. I throw them up and swish my mouth with some mouthwash from my bag before I pull back onto the two-lane road.

A thin layer of melting snow coats the pavement, it must have snowed the night before. When I pull up to Lucian’s cabin, my heart sinks as I notice his truck is not in the driveway. He must have gone out. I don’t want to sit in the car any longer, so I walk his property, heading to the deserted beach.

I stroll out onto the dock that juts out into the water, peering down at the gentle waves that lap at the supports. I’m so engrossed in their movement that a shout causes my heart rate to spike.

“What the fuck are you doing here?! You can’t just come here. This place is for me.”

I wheel around to Lucian’s glare. He looks so handsome and rugged, with his several day's growth of a beard—anger blazes in his sapphire eyes. I wonder for a split second if our child will have those same color eyes.

“I came to talk to you,” I begin.

“Olivia, it’s over. There is nothing left to say. Go home.”

He hurries away, and I stand there, wondering what to do as the cold wind bites across my face. I chase after him, and my boot catches on a raised nail, sending me sprawling across the dock. Lucian turns and quickly comes over to help me up.

“Are you okay?” His voice has lost some of the bark, but there is still anger in his tone.

“Fine, thank you. We need to talk,” I reiterate.

“I don’t want to hear it. Be careful walking to your car. It’s slippery in a few spots.”

Lucian begins to move away again, and I know this might be my only chance to tell him in person.

“Luc, I’m pregnant!” I yell.

He stops and slowly turns to me. “You’re what?”

I walk towards him. “Pregnant,” I softly say.

“How?”

I almost laugh at the question but hold my tongue. “As if you don’t know.”

“Don’t be coy with me. How are you pregnant? You told me you were safe.”

“It must have happened when we were last together here. I was being safe, but I think with all the time we spent in bed those days, I forgot a time or two.”

Lucian’s expression softens, and he runs his hands through his sandy hair that’s getting too long on the sides.

“This doesn’t mean anything between us. I’ll be a father, but I can’t be anything else.”

“I’m not asking for anything. I’ll take whatever you can give. I know I hurt you.”

He sighs. “Come inside. You must be cold.”

He doesn’t take my hand or offer his arm, and the distance between is us feels as wide as the Grand Canyon. He opens the door to the back porch and holds it for me to pass through.

“Thank you, Luc.”

He nods. “Do you want some tea? How long were you out there?”

I check my watch. “About twenty minutes.”

“Who told you I was here?”

I give him a weak smile, not wanting to rat out Rory or Noah. When I don’t answer, he answers for me.

“My fucking brother or Rory. Am I right?”
