“Did you get your results?” I can hear the tension in her voice.

“I’m pregnant,” I blurt out.

“You’re what?”

“Pregnant.”

“Holy shit, Olivia.”

“I know. Now what?”

“You have to tell Lucian. You can’t keep something like this from him.”

“I don’t want him to come back to me because I’m carrying his child.”

“But you need to tell him. The sooner, the better.”

“How do I do that when he doesn’t take my calls? He won’t communicate with me.”

“Rory.”

“What about her?”

“She can find out where he is—if he’s staying at his parent’s house or when he’s at Wilton. You need to go to him and let him know. He has to make his own decision about being a father.”

“Suppose he wants nothing to do with me?”

“It’s not about just you and him anymore. You need to worry about the baby now.”

“I know, but I love him.”

“Olivia, I hate to sound like an asshole because I love and support you always. But you need to learn to make better choices.”

I sigh. “I know. If he never comes back to me, then it’s what I deserve. We will have to learn how to co-parent without being combative. That’s if he even wants to be a father.”

“Don’t be ridiculous. He would take care of his responsibilities.”

“But would he be a good father other than financially? Would he want to interact with our child?”

“You need to talk to him. Call Rory. And Olivia, no matter what Lucian decides, I’ll always be here for you. I don’t agree with some of the things you do, but I will always love you no matter how wrong you are at times.”

“Thanks. I think.”

After I hang up with her, I call Rory, and we have a conversation about where Lucian is and how I can meet up with him. She tells me that she’ll talk to Noah and Richard to see if they know what his schedule is and get back to me. When I disconnect the call, I realize that I’m bouncing my knee anxiously. Waiting for her to call me back is torture, but when she does, I bite my cheek, hoping I can get to Lucian soon.

“He’s at my grandparent’s home until Friday,” she confirms. “My father said Uncle Lucian is going to his place in Bourne this weekend. Do you know where it is?”

“Yes, thank you, Rory. I appreciate your help.”

“Olivia, I never said this before, but you’re good for him. I’ve never seen him as happy since Cassie died. Do the right thing, and don’t break his heart again.”

“I never wanted to. I made a stupid mistake.”

“See that it doesn’t happen again,” she says curtly before she hangs up.

I fully understand Rory’s thinly veiled threat.

On Saturday, I drive to Bourne. I leave before the sun rises. I want to get to Lucian before I lose my nerve. During the six-hour drive, I play possible scenarios in my head about how our conversation will go. He’s either going to take me back or throw me to the curb for good. If the latter happens, I deserve it and will hold no contempt towards him.
