“Would it be possible to get a babysitter for one of these nights?”

“The only one I could get is Lexi. Emma is at the Jersey shore, and I don’t know any regular babysitters. I’ve always used my family.”

“Do you think Olivia would take him?”

“What worries me is that he’s been teething and she’s inexperienced with babies. I would only trust him with Lexi and JC.”

“Can you call them and ask? I want to take you out on a date.”

This is something I’m still not used to with Chase. We never went anywhere but to bed when we were together last time. I’m flattered when he wants to take me out.

“Give me a few minutes to feed CJ.”

“I can do that too.”

“I have some jars of baby food in the cabinet and prepared bottles in the refrigerator.”

I hand him CJ, and he takes him to the kitchen while I go to the bedroom to call Lexi. She said she would be more than happy to take CJ as long as we didn’t get back too late. But I ask her if she would mind keeping him for the night, and after some convincing, she agrees. I tell her how much I appreciate it because I want to spend a night alone with Chase.

In the kitchen, Chase is sitting at the small table and feeding CJ, who is in his highchair. His cheeks are full of peaches, and he looks so adorable that I want to eat him up. I’m going to miss him tonight, but I don’t plan on telling Chase that until we get home from our date.

I dig around my freezer for bagels that I put in there a while ago and ask Chase if he wants one.

“Nope. I’m having the leftover pasta and meatballs for breakfast.”

“Are you serious?”

“Deadly. I love cold pasta, especially cold pasta the next day.”

“Knock yourself out. If you give me CJ, I’ll bath him and get him dressed for the day. Lexi said she’ll take him for the evening. Where are you planning on taking me?”

“It’s my secret. Just dress nice. We have to go back to my apartment, so I can put on a suit.”

“Oh, so we’re going out in style?”

“It’s something I should have done a long time ago.”

“Chase, we didn’t have that type of relationship.”

“But we should have. I took you for granted, and I don’t want to again.”

I blush because I feel overwhelmed by his love. I’m even more glad that I asked Lexi to take CJ for the night. I can’t wait to surprise him with the news that Lexi is taking care of CJ until tomorrow, even though I’m sure he’s going to miss our son as much as I will.

I decide to take CJ in the shower with me for time’s sake. He likes the shower, and since we both need to get clean, it is the easiest way. Halfway through, Chase comes in and steps into the stall with us. I feel most like a family when we’re together like this.

Chase holds him while I finish up, step out, wrap myself in a towel, and then hold out a separate towel to take CJ with. He starts whining, and I know his teeth are bothering him since he’s pulling at his ear. I dry him as fast as I can. It seems the only thing that stops him from crying is his teething ring. By the time I get it and take him to his room to dress him, he’s a very unhappy boy. My poor baby, I coo.

It’s a beautiful day, but with CJ so uncomfortable, I think we should take it easy at home. Since Lexi is closer to my apartment than Chase’s, we decide to spend the day here. Chase only leaves to drive his SUV back to the garage. Maybe we can go to Cape Cod in another weekend or two. I would love to see the house and maybe sit on the beach before it gets too cool.

We enjoy the day together, and with the help of teething rings, some cool water to drink, and us occasionally gently massaging his gums, CJ remains fairly calm. I need to remember to tell Lexi, or she’ll have a fit with a fussy baby.

At four-thirty, I get dressed for our evening out. It’s still warm out, so I put on a sleeveless sapphire-colored dress with a short skirt and a plunging neckline. I pull my hair up and off my neck. As I rarely do this, I already look different. Then I apply a heavier than usual makeup. The last thing I do is select a pair of heels that will make me almost eye to eye with Chase.

When I come out of the bedroom, Chase stops playing with CJ to stare at me. I can see the desire in his eyes, and he gives me a wicked smile as he surveys my handy work.

“I didn’t know I was going to have to spend the evening fending men off.”

“I highly doubt that will be the case.”
