“Steven. He’s also a trained chef besides being a restaurant owner.”

Chase scowls at that but says nothing. We finish dinner in silence, and I wonder what’s going on in his head. My fears are relieved when he reaches over and wipes a spot of sauce from the corner of my mouth.

“I’ll clean up. Why don’t you sit down? You must be tired.”

“Chase, you worked a full twelve hours on your feet. I think you should be more tired than me.”

“Why don’t we clean up together? It will go faster.”

In five minutes, the dishes are washed, and the leftover spaghetti is put in the refrigerator. Chase holds my hand as we sit on the couch, then pulls me onto his lap, so I’m straddling his legs.

“I missed you today, Miss Stanford.”

“I missed you too, Dr. Pearce.”

He strokes my face with his fingers, and I bend over to kiss him. I desire him—I always do. I’m forceful with my kisses, fisting his hair to hold him to me. His hands skim my breasts over my shirt, then slip under and travel upwards. Chase lifts me off of him so I can lay on my back. Planting his arms on either side of me, he hovers for a moment, taking me in. He then pushes my shirt up and kisses my belly, gently biting into my flesh. My hand drifts to his waistband when I hear CJ start to cry. Chase immediately jumps up, and I pull at the leg of his jeans.

“Don’t go to him yet. He sometimes does that and goes right back to sleep.”

We wait and listen, but CJ is not settling down. Following his lead, I get up, and we both head to his room. After a check over, he’s dry, so it can’t be that. Chase picks him up and gently rocks him in his arms, but CJ continues to cry, and I begin to worry. He usually quiets down by now.

“He’s drooling, and I have a feeling his upper teeth are trying to come in. Let me get his teething ring.”

CJ is still fussing in Chase’s arms when I come back with the teething ring. The moment I put it against his lips, and he starts to chew on it, it quiets him down.

“I think he’s teething. Do you think we should go tomorrow?”

“We could,” Chase says. “He will have a doctor on call.”

“And a very handsome one at that.”

CJ seems content with the teething ring, but the minute Chase puts him back in his crib, he begins to fuss again.

“Let’s take him to our bed. He might want to be comforted by us.”

Chase carries him to the bedroom, where he sits down with CJ. Our son seems satisfied and continues to chew on the cool teething ring—yet another photo op I take advantage of. Soon I will have enough pictures to make several collages to hang on the walls around my apartment and at Chase’s.

When CJ falls asleep, I take him back to his crib, hoping he lets us get a little sleep, but that is not to be. After Chase and I start to kiss, CJ starts to cry again. I bring him back to our bed, and that’s where he stays for the night. He keeps fussing on and off. In the morning, I’m exhausted and have no desire to travel six hours to the house in Yarmouth.

I yawn. “Chase, I seriously am so tired. Would you mind terribly if we stayed in the city this weekend?”

He shakes his head in agreement. “I think it’s a good idea because this little guy is not happy. We’re better off at home.”

“Would you like to come to my apartment for the weekend?”

“I guess that’s alright. At least you have a nice terrace that we can enjoy. If you let me, I’ll also show you what else I can cook.”

“If you’re going to be my wife one of these days, I’d like to know if I’m going to starve or be doing all the cooking.”

“Very funny, Dr. Pearce. I can cook, keep house, and a lot of other things.”

“I know you can—you’re a great mother.”

“I’m more than that, you know.”

“Megan, don’t get defensive. There are too many qualities you have for me to name.”

CJ starts to stir, so I get up to change him. Since he’s fussy, I get another teething ring for him. I guess we are going to enjoy all the city has to offer this weekend.
