“If you love me, then why was there a woman, a naked woman, in your home?”

“I can explain. You owe me that much. If you don’t believe me, then I’ll leave.”

I cross my arms defiantly and say, “I’m listening.”

“The woman that was in my shower was Amberlynn. The woman I was engaged to.”

The wine I drank rose into my throat, threatening to stain my beige couch. Clamping my hand over my mouth, I swallowed it back.

“You’re fiancé? Why was she there?” I whisper.

“She came to the city for a seminar. I didn’t know she was here, and she never called me to let me know she was coming. I was as surprised as you when I found her in my apartment.”

“How did she get in if you didn’t let her?”

“She had a key. We visited Manhattan a couple of times when we were engaged. Our schedules were different for the conferences we attended, so I gave her a key. I never changed the locks after we broke up, and I completely forgot she had a key.”

“So, she just invited herself into your apartment? How did she get past security?”

“She told them she was my fiancé. She was still on the list from months ago, so they let her up when she showed identification.”

“What did you say to her when you found her there?”

“I told her she had no right to invade my privacy. She assumed that I wasn’t attached even though I told her about you before I left.”

“Does she know we’re together?”

“She does now. She wanted to stay the night, but I told her that it was impossible. I made a reservation at a hotel for her and paid for it with my credit card. And I asked for my key back. I would have gotten here sooner, but she had to get dressed and pack her things.” After a beat, he asks, “How many glasses of wine have you had?”

“I was working on my second one. I had a rough day.”

“Megan, CJ is here, and you can’t just drink when things get tough.”

“Don’t tell me how to take care of my son. I had no intention of having more than two glasses of wine. I hardly have a buzz on.”

“Have you had anything to eat?”

I had to think. Lunch, no, because my bagel ended up in the garbage. Dinner, no, but that was due to the way I felt when I got here. “No.”

“Then you’re done drinking. Why were you at my place? I thought we agreed that you would stay away until the situation with Barrett was solved.”

“I needed you,” I say softly. “I had a horrible day, and I needed some comfort.”

Chase’s face becomes pained. “And you walked into that fucked up shit. I’m sorry, Megan.”

“First of all, you agreed for us to be separated, I didn’t. I don’t want to be apart from you.”

“Do you think this is easy for me? I dream about you. I took a nap at work, and you filled my mind.”

My stomach starts to get butterflies, knowing that he thinks about me all the time. It’s secretly something I’ve wanted to know for a long time.

“Did you think of me when we were sleeping together?”

“Sometimes. I thought it was just because we saw each other so much but now I know I was in love with you. I couldn’t admit it to myself. Do you understand now why it’s so important that you’re safe?”

“Yes, but aren’t we stronger together?”

“You know what I want to do to you right now? How much I want you?”
