“Those findings took four days to complete.”

“Are you defying me?”

His blue eyes grow dark, and his face clouds with anger.

“Chase, why are you speaking to me like this?”

“I’m your boss. What way should I speak to you? I told you no special treatment. I’m the head of this department, and my signature will not go on any results until I’m satisfied. Run the tests again. You’re the supervisor. You run them yourself.”

“But that will take two days.”

“You can always cut it down to one if you work late. Show me some of the diligence you gave to Doug.”

He shoves the folder across the desk at me, and I’m shocked. I mechanically take it and exit his office. When I get to the elevator, I realize that I’m barely breathing. That son of a bitch! How dare he talk to me that way! What the fuck was his problem?! I thought we had an understanding after dinner on Friday night. Shaking, I drag myself into the lab where Edgar looks up from his desk as I enter.

“Megan, are you alright?”

“No. Dr. Pearce wants me to run the tests again.”

“You mean on the ones I ran with Ted?”

“Yes. He wants me to do it myself.”

“Does he think we did the tests improperly?”

“He said the results look wrong. He wants me to do it since I’m the supervisor. I know those test results are accurate.”

Edgar watches me sympathetically as I pull on my coat and join Ted and Cindy in the testing lab. While I start gathering all the materials I need to run the tests, I realize I should have picked up another cup of coffee and some aspirin because my head is pounding.

Ten hours later, everyone has gone home. It’s after nine, and I’m only just finishing up the testing. My last step is inputting the results into my lab sheets. Once I have everything, I head to my desk to compile them. Since I’ve been craving sleep all day, somewhere between sitting down at my desk and logging into the company database is when I fall asleep.

“Megan, Megan, wake up.”

In the distance, I hear a deep voice pulling me up from dreamland. When I lift my head, I’m partially aware of a string of drool dripping down my chin, which I sleepily wipe.

“Why are you still here?” the voice asks.

I turn to see Chase standing over me. He reaches out to stroke my cheek.

“You have an indentation from your pen on your face. How long have you been sleeping here?”

“I–I don’t know,” I mumble, looking down at my work. “I wanted to finish running the re-test before I went home.”

“You could have finished tomorrow morning.”

My head snaps back around, and I narrow my eyes at him. “You said you wanted it today.”

“Today is over; it’s now tonight.”

“And I’m finished. I just need to put the results in the database and print the results. You’ll have it in a little while.”

“I’m leaving, so you might as well too. You can finish tomorrow morning and bring the sheets for signing then.”

I start rubbing my temples because my head feels like a beating drum. I can hear my pulse in my ears.

“Are you okay?”

“I’ve had a headache since this morning,” I nearly growl.
