I remain silent as I unlock the door. He places his hand on my back and guides me inside. I want to pull away, but he grips my arm and pulls me to the couch.

“Tell me,” he instructs.

“You’re not going to like it.”

“Now, I really want to know.”

I tell him about what Naomi brought to me, which causes him to curse. I’m glad that CJ is at Lexi’s tonight because I think he would be frightened by the tone of his father’s voice.

“It’s such crap,” I huff. “I don’t want to lose my job.”

“Why would you lose your job? You didn’t do anything.”

“I was involved with an illicit affair with my boss,” I remind him pointedly. “It leaves for speculation about what I did with Doug to get those two promotions.”

He bangs his fist on the coffee table, which startles me.

“Fuck them! You’re not that kind of woman. Let them think what they want. This is my fault. I should never have brought you into my bed.”

“Chase, none of this would be a reality if that was the case. CJ wouldn’t be here.”

“Even if I had to quit Nolan, I would have found a way because I think we were meant to be together. I mean, I’m a doctor—I could work anywhere. I only took the research job because of my injury.”

“Suppose I have to quit?” I counter. “I can’t start over; I’ve come so far. I need to support CJ and myself.”

His brow furrows. “Why would you have to quit?”

“People can be cruel, Chase. I had to put up with shit after you left. They talked behind my back about me sleeping with Doug. It was only after Naomi promoted me that the talking stopped. Now it’s going to start up again.”

“If you have to quit, I’ll take care of you and CJ. You can move in with me. I make a good enough salary to support us.”

“Chase, I don’t want you to support me,” I stress. “I went to school, and I climbed through the ranks at Nolan. Now I have to tuck my tail between my legs because of some gossip?”

“Then ignore it. It will die down once they find something else to talk about.”

“That could be months! And what about respect? I’m in charge of fifteen people. I can’t have them thinking I got my promotions by being on my back.”

“Megan, can you just relax?”

“I’m nervous.”

“Get changed, and let’s have dinner at Lexi’s. Talking about what will or won’t happen is only going to stress you out, so we can discuss this later. I’m also feeling nervous about seeing your family again.”

I feel like an idiot. He hasn’t seen my family in over a year, and I’m sure what they will say when they see him has been gnawing at him all day.

“I’m sorry. I’ll change and be right out.”

By the time I come out of the closet in my panties and bra, Chase is right there.

“Any chance for a quickie before we go?” he asks with a smirk.

I check my watch and shake my head. Dinner is at six, and it’s already a quarter to. We have just enough time for me to change and for us to walk the few blocks to my sister’s apartment if we want to make it on time, but even then, I’m sure we’ll be a few minutes late.

He’s clearly not listening because he undoes his jeans. His erection is already straining against his boxer shorts, tenting the fabric, and the sight alone makes me start to heat. He maneuvers me against the wall and begins kissing my neck, trailing his head down in between the flushed valley of my breasts.

Chase then returns to my lips and roughly palms my breasts while he leans into me, pushing my back flat against the wall.

“Come on, sweetheart,” he breathily coaxes, “I’ll be quick.”
