“Just be straight with me.”
Hesitating, I tell her, “Yes, I’m involved with him. How did you know?”
“A doctor at NYP, who I have a relationship with, said that he saw pictures from Dr. Pearce that contain you.”
“How does he know it’s me?”
“He used to work for the Nolan Dallas office. He remembered seeing your picture in the newsletter. Dr. Pearce mentioned that you and he had a child as well.”
“Is this going to be a problem?”
“Were you two having an affair when Dr. Pearce was your superior?”
If I say no, then Dr. Revere is going to know that I’m lying since she knew I was pregnant after Chase left. As such, she could easily figure out the timeline.
“Yes,” I say quietly.
“Was it consensual, or did he coerce you?”
I recoil. “Naomi, you think I would let him sexually harass me into bed?”
“I’m just asking.”
“It was consensual, and it did not happen here. We never spoke of our relationship at work. It was strictly business until we were at home,” I know this is partially a lie, but I can’t tell Dr. Revere the truth without it creating a bigger problem.
“How long did it go on?”
“Almost the entire time he was here. It started two weeks after he arrived.”
She nods. “I heard the rumor and wanted to get your take on it. With Doug Bannon being your ex-boss and you getting promoted under him, your affair with Dr. Pearce doesn’t look good.”
“That’s ridiculous. Dr. Pearce did not promote me while he was here. You promoted me; did I sleep with you?”
Naomi laughs. “Nothing would have flattered me more if you did.”
I smile weakly at her humor, but I’m worried about my job. HR can’t do anything to Chase now that he works somewhere else, but they can scrutinize my work.
“So, what does this mean?”
“It means nothing yet,” she assures. “I’m your boss, and I can vouch for your talent and skill. I just heard the rumor and wanted to make sure I had all the facts in case I needed to defend you. Don’t worry about it, Megan. Even if you did sleep with Doug to get your promotions, and I know you didn’t, he was your superior, not the other way around. He had all the power.”
“This is bullshit. I did nothing wrong.”
She holds out her hands as if agreeing. “Go home. Have a nice weekend, and don’t worry about this nasty gossip. We’ll handle it if anything comes of it. I just thought you should know.”
“Thanks, Naomi. I appreciate it.”
As I stand, she hugs me. At this point, I’m glad she’s my boss.
When I get home, Chase is waiting for me in the lobby. I keep forgetting to get a key made for him.
“Hey, baby. I’m happy to see you.” He kisses me, but I’m not very responsive. “What’s wrong?”
“I’ll tell you when we get upstairs.”
In the elevator, he keeps his eyes fixed on me. I know how angry he’s going to be when I reveal what Naomi told me earlier.
“Megan, you’re worrying me. What’s going on?”
