“Okay, that would be fine. At least I know some of them.”

“Well, you know Lexi and JC, and of course Hunter who is JC’s brother. And Hunter is engaged to Rory. I also have a younger sister, Emma. She’s twenty-four and lives in the city now. She has a job at Scarborough Publishing. You’ll probably meet her soon since she occasionally comes to Lexi’s for Friday dinners.”

“Friday dinners?”

“You forgot already?”

“It’s not that. I just thought I wasn’t welcome anymore.”

“Chase, you’re my boyfriend and our child’s father; of course, you’re welcome. Consider everything undone. There are no hard feelings.”

“I’d like that. I quite enjoyed the atmosphere.”

“Well, you might not like it now that Johnny is three, and Arabella is walking all over the place. Our nephew was an absolute terror in the park. Thank God Hunter came along and took Johnny to a soccer clinic, or Lexi would have torn her hair out.”

“Our nephew,” he repeats with a grin.

“Sorry, we’re a couple. I’ve been thinking of us as one.”

“Maybe there will be a day when we are one, forever.”

The prospect of his words makes me freeze. There is no lack of shocking statements that are coming out of my boyfriend’s mouth lately. However, this revelation surprises me the most because he’s the one talking about marriage. It’s amazing how just a month ago, he was engaged to someone else, and now he is thinking about being engaged to me. I let the statement go without commenting.

“Megan, did you hear what I said?”

“About?” I say lowly.

“Us being together forever. You didn’t say anything. Does that scare you? Am I moving too fast? I mean, I’m not going to ask you tomorrow, but someday I want us to be a family.”

I stroke his cheek with my knuckles. “We already are a family. We don’t need a piece of paper to be one.”

“That’s something else I want to talk to you about.”

“A piece of paper?”

“No, CJ’s last name. I want it to be mine.”

“He’ll be a junior if we change it since you are the original Chase James Pearce.”

“He won’t be a junior; he’ll be the third. My father was the first.”

“I didn’t know you were named after your father.”

“I don’t want to be, but I had no choice. I wish CJ weren’t named after me either.”

“I’m, I’m sorry,” I stammer.

“Megan, don’t be. You didn’t know because I didn’t tell you anything.”

“I just wanted him to have your name so he would at least have a part of his father. I didn’t know if he would ever meet you. I guess I made a mistake.”

“Stop it,” he softly chastises. “Don’t blame yourself. I know why you did it, and I love you for it. We both made mistakes, but we can make them right.”

Chase pulls me onto his lap, where I snuggle against his chest, breathing in his scent. I can’t help but feel bad about the naming mistake after he dropped hints at how horrible of a man the first Chase Pearce was.

“I went into your office today,” I confess. “I didn’t mean to invade your privacy, but I wanted to show Lexi your apartment. I was wondering how you got a white rose so easily in the wee hours of the morning.”

His chest rumbles as he chuckles. “You caught me. I ordered a bouquet of roses while you were at your place. I told them an extra twenty was in it for them if they delivered in a half-hour.”
