“Yes, that was part of it.”
He crosses his arms and scowls. “I still have my doubts about him being around our son.”
I take a long sip of my coffee and avoid answering him. Eventually, he will find out I’m no longer with Steven, but I’m not ready to tell him yet.
“It’s nothing to worry about.”
“Maybe for you, but I’m concerned about who will be around our child.”
“It’s not a problem.”
“Why? Why is it not a problem?” he insists.
Knowing he won’t back down, I respond, “Because I broke up with Steven. The engagement is off. Are you satisfied?”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know,” Chase sounds genuine as if he truly cares.
“Well, now you do, so stop worrying about him. He would have made a good father.”
“Which is to say that I won’t?”
“I didn’t say that.”
“No, but the tone of your voice implied it,” he insists.
“How could you possibly know that?”
“I know some things about you, Megan.”
“According to you, but you know little about me,” I snap.
“Stop getting defensive.”
CJ starts crying, and I round the counter to go to him, but Chase stops me with a flick of his hand. He goes to our son and picks him up. Cradling him, he talks softly. CJ quiets down as Chase rocks him.
“He’s teething,” I inform. “See the two bottom teeth trying to push through?”
“Ahh, yes. What are you giving him for the pain?”
“I have cold teething rings for him. That seems to help.”
“No numbing gel?”
“No. I read that it can be dangerous for babies because it numbs their throats. He’s doing fine with the teething rings, although he cried a lot this past week.”
Chase plants a kiss on CJ’s head. For an irrational split second, I’m envious because I want those lips on me, but I know that’s not going to happen.
“When are you going back to Los Angeles?”
“I’m not.”
I’m not sure what to say when he tells me this news. “Excuse me? Don’t you have a fiancé to get back to?”
“We’re on a break. Amberlynn is not thrilled with the prospect of being a stepmother, and after a discussion, we decided to put our wedding on hold. I figured that I needed to move back to New York to be with CJ. If Amberlynn wants to get back together, she knows that the only choice is to move with me.”
My heart soars, feeling incredibly light in my chest. He’s back in Manhattan, and he’s on a hiatus from his engagement! Maybe there is a chance for me.
“Where are you going to work? You left Nolan, didn’t you?”
