On the way home, my phone buzzes with an incoming text. Checking it, I see that it’s Chase. I ignore it, and a minute later, it buzzes again.

“Who’s that?” Emma questions.

“Just a friend,” I dismiss. “I’ll answer when we get home.”

“You can answer it now. I don’t mind.”

I unlock my screen to read what he has to say.

C: I miss you. Tonight is our night, but I’m stuck at some stuffy dinner. Did you go to dinner at Lexi’s?

M: You miss me? Does that mean you had time to think about what you want? And yes, I went to dinner at Lexi’s. My sister, Emma, is in town and staying with me.

C: I’ve thought about some things, but it needs to be said in person rather than over text. Don’t you agree?

M: Yes, I do. I’ll talk to you when you get home Tuesday.

C: I’ll be home late so we could have dinner together on Wednesday if you’d like.

M: Wednesday will be fine. Enjoy your dinner.

I slip the phone back into my pocket and catch Emma looking at me oddly.

“It was my friend, Chase,” I explain. “He’s away and wanted to see how I was doing.”

“I never heard you mention him before.”

“We just became friends recently. You’ll meet him sometime.”

Emma crooks her eyebrow at me. She’s more than aware of my resistance to relationships after Jeremy. “Is he a friend-friend or a friend?”

“He’s a friend-friend. Nothing is going on between us.”

I hate to lie to my sister, but if I told her, she would blab to Lexi and, worse, my parents. They would be horrified to learn that I was (in their words) conducting myself like a common whore since they taught me better. It’s a can of worms I do not want to open. They don’t understand that some people have sexual relationships without the dating part.

Because of how Emma likes to spread around in her sleep, we decided she could take the couch in my office. I would share my bed with her, but I would end up finding myself at the edge of the bed. She also stays up later than I do. A habit she is going to have to break once she gets a permanent job.

We spend the weekend together, and I invite Olivia, Lexi, and Rory over for some girl time. I miss spending time with the girls, and it’s a treat when everyone has free time. Hunter and JC are taking care of Johnny and Arabella for the night. During our dinner and movie marathon, my thing with Chase is still nagging at me, and I wish that I could tell everyone what is going to get a woman’s perspective, but that would be inviting trouble.

By the time everyone leaves, I’ve had my fill of gossip, talking about the best sex positions (we’ve heard about,) and how to tell if a guy is really into you. Even if they didn’t realize it, they were helping me out with my dilemma.

On Sunday, Emma leaves since she is still working at a bookstore near our childhood home and is on call for Monday. I need to get ready for work tomorrow anyway. I haven’t heard from Chase since Friday night, and his radio silence leaves me down in the dumps. I know I'm stubborn by not contacting him, but I wish he would text me.

Sleep doesn’t come so easily on Sunday or Monday night. Chase will be home on Tuesday, and because we haven’t seen each other in almost a week, I’m incredibly horny. My period fell perfectly in the middle of last week, so I don’t have to worry about it if we pick up right where we left off.

Tuesday is a total bitch for me. I can’t concentrate on anything, and after Cindy hands me another pile of results data, I end up typing it on the wrong line in the database. The clock tells me there’s an hour of work I need to do before my break. By lunchtime, I’m falling asleep, so go downstairs to the cafeteria to buy the largest coffee they have. It’s now the second week of May, and I decide to sit outside for a few minutes.

As I’m checking emails on my phone, I happen to look up for a split second and see Chase entering the building. My heart skips a beat at the sight of him. I immediately want to follow him to his office and let him see how glad I am that he’s home. Trying to bottle my excitement, I head back upstairs, all the while, hoping that he summons me to his office.

When I get to my desk, a large bouquet of white roses in a vase is on my desk. I pull off the card, look around, and then read the note inside.

I’ve missed you. Dinner tonight?

-The Big Bad Wolf.

Honestly, I don’t want dinner with him. I only want him to fuck me until I’m screaming his name. I’ve been craving his touch since we last had sex, which is almost two weeks ago. Far too long.

“Who are those from?” Cindy asks, pointing to the vase.
