“I don’t understand, things between us are going great. Our arrangement is working fine.”

“No, it’s not. You do things that confuse me all the time.”

“Like what?”

“You treat me like a girlfriend and then revert to our arrangement. I don’t appreciate having my head twisted around.”

“When do I treat you like a girlfriend?”

“When you hold my hand, put your arm around my shoulders, take care of me when I’m tired, protect me.”

“Friends do that for each other.”

“You’re walking a very thin line between friends and relationship.”

“Excuse me for giving a shit. Would you rather I fuck you and throw you out after we’re done?”

“That would be terrible, but at last, if you did that, I wouldn’t be confused. You need to think about what you want before you come back to New York.”

“Megan, am I missing something? Do you feel differently about me than I do you?”

“That’s just it. I don’t know how you feel about me or what you want.”

He huffs and sits down while running his hands through his hair. A look of worry is fixed on his face.

“Do you not want to continue?” he asks.

“I want to, but I need to know where the line is. You’ve muddied up the waters, and I don’t know where I stand.”

“Then maybe we do need some time apart. We can regroup when I get back next week. That’s if you want to.”

“I just want to hear what you want, plain and simple.”

“And I’ll have an answer for you by next week.”

His answer irritates me, but I rise from the chair. “Goodnight, Dr. Pearce. Have a nice conference.”

“Goodnight, Miss Stanford,” he replies softly as I open the door.

I try to keep my mind off of Chase while he’s gone. It’s hard, but as the weekend arrives, I plan a few things with my younger sister, Emma. She’s been searching for a job in Manhattan, and if she finds one, I might have a roommate. I’m not sure I want that, however, because it means that any time I spend with Chase will have to be at his apartment.

Emma had recently gotten her head out of the clouds and realized that at twenty-four, she needed to get herself a career. She has a degree in English, so she’s looking to work for one of the publishing houses in Manhattan.

On Friday, I get home and find my little sister, in a charcoal gray business suit, sitting in the lobby. She has her suitcase. The only problem was, she didn’t tell me she was coming tonight. Last we spoke, it was supposed to be Saturday morning.

“Why didn’t you text me at work?” was the first thing out of my mouth. “I would have told the front desk to let you in my apartment.”

“My phone is dead. I forgot to charge it before I left.”

I resist rolling my eyes. “When did you know you were coming?”

“Last night, but I was so caught up in things that I forgot to let you know. Scarborough wanted a second interview, so I just came from there. They only let me know yesterday afternoon, and mom drove me up a wall picking an outfit, so I forgot to contact you.”

“Well, I’m about to go to Lexi and JC’s for dinner. It’s become a Friday thing for the past few weeks. Let’s go upstairs and change first. Everyone will be thrilled to see you.”

When we make it to Lexi’s, I was right; everyone is surprised to see Emma. My little sister is gorgeous, and it amazes me when she tells us that she doesn’t have a boyfriend. We share the same blonde hair and green eyes, but she’s less curvy and bustier than me, like Lexi. Lexi is the odd one out since she has light brown hair and golden-brown eyes. But our faces all look alike.

Dinner is fun since Johnny is now ignoring both Hunter and me in favor of sitting on Emma’s lap. She’s his favorite now. He even lets her read to him until he falls asleep. That gives me some time to talk to Hunter. When he asks about Chase, I tell him that I discussed it with him and that we’re taking some time to decide what we want.
