FUCK! I thought. JC never told me I had until noon on Wednesday to get this completed. I wanted to run to his office and wrap my hands around his throat. I wasn’t even here for two days, and he was already piling work on me.

“Fine. Set it and log a reminder for tomorrow at ten.”

“Will you be working late tonight?”

“Well, seeing as I have no choice, yes.”

Nikki hesitated, looking for words to say, and I could figure out what was going on in her mind.

“I don’t need you tonight. I can handle this on my own.”

I could hear Nikki breathe a sigh of relief.

“It’s just that my sister is visiting from Iowa, and I wanted to take her out,” she said.

“It’s not a problem, but I do expect you to work late occasionally. Is that understood?”

“Sure, no problem. Thank you.”

Nikki hurried away, leaving me in a cloud of her too strong perfume, which was starting to give me a headache. I would have to ask her to take it easy on the spray bottle.

I was fucking annoyed. Just like JC not to give me all the particulars. I decided to confront him while it was still fresh in my mind, and I wasn’t drowning in rewrites I knew I would need to do. I rose to head to his office, but before I could get around my desk, JC was there in my doorway.

“Could you please shut the door?” I said, my eyebrows knitted as I sat down.

JC eyed me full well knowing my mood because he’d seen the same one many times before.

“Please, Lexi, I seriously can’t take any more emotional shit today.”

“When were you going to tell me that I needed to have the copy for the Kingston Group done by tomorrow?”

“I was going to tell you now. How did you find out so quickly?”

“Nikki. She came to let me know that my electronic calendar would is updated with the information.”

“I’m sorry. I just found out that Mr. Kingston wanted to come tomorrow to see progress. We’re overdue, and they aren’t happy. I need you to wow them.”

“I can see this is going to be a long night.”

“It will be, and I will be working alongside you so don’t worry.”

I shuddered inwardly at the thought that I would be here alone with JC at night. I was afraid of my own emotions and what’s more, I didn’t want to be so close to him.

“Lexi?”

“Good, I think you should work with me on this since it was dumped in my lap last minute.”

“We can get sushi. You still like it don’t you?”

“Yes, but I don’t eat it as often. Noah isn’t too keen on it.”

“We can do what we used to do years ago. Sit on the floor and eat out of the containers. Remember?”

I did. Our first apartment was tiny and barely had room for a loveseat. Instead, we opted for tons of pillows that we would lay out on the floor. We would order sushi from a restaurant down the street and lay all the containers out on the floor and feed each other. It gave me a warm feeling to think about our fun time.

“Yes, but we need to forget that and discuss the campaign.”

I tried to keep my voice even and steady, but it cracked. I didn’t want to be reminded of the times we spent together. I didn’t want to think about how many times had we made love in that small apartment. That seemed like forever ago.
