“I’m sorry if I upset you.”

“You didn’t upset me. I just want you to stop bringing up the past.”

“If it bothers you that much, I’ll stop. It wasn’t all bad.”

“I know it wasn’t, but it’s long ago.”

JC turned to leave my office, saying he was going to get his laptop. I glanced at my watch, not realizing it was close to 4:00 PM. I grabbed my phone and texted Noah. He should have been in Mexico by now and I had not received any messages from him. I waited but nothing came in return. It wasn’t like him not to contact me when he was traveling. I began to chew on my lip and when JC came back to my office, he frowned.

“Are you ever going to forgive me for dumping this in your lap?”

“What are you talking about? It’s just work.”

“You’re not even aware that you’re chewing on your lip. You always do that when you’re nervous or upset.”

“It has nothing to do with this,” I gestured to the file on my desk.

“Then what?”

“Noah, I haven’t heard from him. It’s very unlike him not to let me know he landed.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing. Maybe he has no signal.”

I hoped that JC was right. I looked up at him and saw him staring at my lip, almost willing me to stop chewing on it which I did.

“He’s fine, you’ll see.”

As if on command, my phone rang. Noah.

“Hey babe, I’m sorry, connection is shitty here. I tried to text you earlier, but it never went through.”

I was just about to reply when static took over and the line disconnected.

“Shit!”

“Was that Noah?”

“Yes, and you were right. No reception.”

The corners of JC’s eyes crinkled as he grinned. “See, I told you. Stop worrying.”

I gave him a weak smile. JC pulled one of the chairs in front of my desk around to sit near me. I found it hard to concentrate with him so close. He smelled wonderful. I think he knew he affected me because he brushed against me more than once. I never said working with JC would be easy, and I was right.

Chapter 3

At five, Nikki stopped in to ask if I needed anything. I waved her away, telling her I had the project in hand and told her to go home. I watched JC follow her tight skirted ass out of the office with his eyes, and I scowled at him.

“She’s a beautiful girl.”

“Don’t you have enough problems?” I said.

“I can admire her, can’t I?”

“As I remember, that was one of your problems when we were together.”

“I don’t do that anymore, but I can look. And I thought you said no more bringing up the past.”

I looked down at my desk. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”
