“Did Noah’s snoring keep you awake?”

“No, he isn’t home. He had a business trip.”

“That’s the best time to sleep. You get the whole bed to yourself.”

“Nikki, I wish I had your enthusiasm, but I don’t sleep well alone.”

“I have my own apartment, and I love it after sharing a dorm suite with three other women.”

“I haven’t lived alone in quite a while.”

She lowers her voice to ask, “Did you live with Mr. Lawson?”

“I did. We had a small apartment together after college.”

“And after that?”

“I went back to live with my parents, then moved to an apartment with a roommate. After she moved to California, I lived by myself for several months until I moved in with Noah. I hated sleeping alone on the nights before I met Noah.”

“He seems nice. When are you getting married?”

“October if we can ever get all the arrangements finished.”

A knock on my door ceases the conversation, and Nikki opens the door to reveal JC.

“Camden, what can I do for you?”

“Mr. Kingston. He is unsure of the completed copy you provided.”

“But he approved it. He said it was a go.”

“He wants an after-hours meeting tonight to discuss some changes. Can you clear your schedule?”

“I have nothing going on tonight. It won’t be a problem.”

It’s nearly three now, and I wonder why this wasn’t brought to my attention earlier in the day. Not that I have anything to do after work. At least I won’t have to wander around the loft alone all night. I’m fortunate because Megan has an interview in the city with a company in midtown on Thursday. She’ll be staying with me both Thursday and Friday nights.

“Great. Meet me in the conference room at five.”

He walks out, closing the door behind him.

“I know this might sound inappropriate, but he is gorgeous.”

“Nikki, don’t get caught up in Camden’s looks.”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”

“No problem. I think we’re done here. See that the graphics for the Camilla ad get finished by tomorrow afternoon. I want them on my desk by the end of the day.”

Nikki nods and gets up to leave. When she’s gone, I suddenly feel exhausted. Lack of sleep and the stress of worrying about Noah are starting to take their toll. I yawn and take a sip of my cold coffee.

“Ugh.”

I spit it back into the cup. I get up to get a fresh cup and almost run into JC as I’m leaving my office. He has his travel mug in hand, and he laughs when he sees mine in my own.

“We had the same thought. You look tired. Are you not sleeping?”

I yawn again, “Noah’s gone for the week, so what do you think?”
