“Because you were dating that guy, what was his name, Randy?”

“Yes, Randy Gates. He was nice enough, but he was more into his car than he was into me. Who drives in the city?”

“But you dated him for a year.”

“And you were dating a lot too. I used to see you on campus with one blonde or another. I was amazed when you asked me out since I wasn’t your typical.”

“I liked women, not just blondes.”

“Yeah, I know. Even when you had me you liked women. I forgave you time and time again because I loved you. You hurt me so much.”

I can feel tears stinging my eyes and I flutter my eyelids to push them back.

“I was so stupid. But after I asked you to marry me, I didn’t do it again.”

“No, you did something worse. You stole my job and broke off our engagement months before our wedding.”

“If I could take it all back I would. Do you love Noah like you love me?”

“JC, I loved you. I love Noah. He’s never given me any reason to do otherwise. He would never cheat on me or hurt me.”

Brianna comes into the house with Nikki and interrupts our conversation.

“Tea? You’re drinking tea? It’s hot out.”

“Brianna, stop being rude.”

“Fuck you, Camden.”

It’s obvious she’s drunk and she gets up in a huff to go back outside.

“I can’t believe you take that from her,” I whispered.

“I told you, our relationship is beyond repair. I’ve mentioned a separation, but she said that’s out of the question. She doesn’t care about our marriage, only the appearance. Her friends are jealous she has an older, successful husband.”

“JC, you have a choice. You don’t have to stay with her if you’re unhappy.”

“And risk having my balls cut off by my father and hers? It’s more than I can stand.”

“You don’t work for your father. So why are you so afraid?”

“My salary pays for certain things and then some things are supplemented by my father and hers.”

“Like this house?”

“Yes, like this house. If I want to forgo the good life, then I can leave her but there will be consequences.”

“I’m sorry it’s so complicated for you. I want to be your friend; I really do but you have to stop making rude comments.”

“I promise I will. I missed you the past few years.”

We continue to talk about things and hours go by until I notice on the clock above the fireplace that it’s nearing one in the morning. Noah is still playing cards in the pool house and with a three-hour drive back to the city, we better go to bed if we want to get up early. I rise to head to the pool house.

“Where are you going?” JC asks.

“To get Noah. I forgot to tell you that we want to get back to the city early tomorrow.”

I see his face fill with disappointment and my heart hurts for him.
