“I bet you are.”

JC isn’t referring to the fact we came to the party but rather that I came when Noah and I had sex in the bathroom.

“That’s rude.”

“I have no idea what you mean.”

I lower my voice so Nikki and Brianna don’t hear, “It really is bothering you that I had sex with Noah in the bathroom, isn’t it?”

“Why would you think it would bother me.”

“Seriously, I think you still have a thing for me. Your actions during the last week have made that clear. Am I going to have to quit?”

“Lexi, I don’t want you to quit because of some misunderstanding. I’m just trying to be your friend.”

“It seems like your trying to be more. You should work on your marriage.”

His face clouds and he moves back over to sit near Brianna. I feel bad to lay the cards on the table, but it needed to be said. I don’t feel the way he wants me to. Anyway, what am I supposed to have an illicit affair with my boss? I feel hands on my bare shoulders and see Noah is back.

“Miss me?”

“I always do. Think how it is when you go away?”

“Lexi don’t start. I didn’t plan it this way. In another few weeks I won’t have to worry about it. Brice is handling the interviews and once the training is finished, I can stay home.”

“I hope it’s quick. I slept horribly while you were gone.”

“I know baby. I didn’t sleep so well either.”

Noah leans over and gives me a hard kiss on the lips. Out of the corner of my eye, I see JC watching our exchange with a look of longing on his face.

Chapter 8

Brianna’s tipsy, drunk even and in between JC staring at me, he’s arguing with her. The sun is starting to set, and several guests have already departed the party.

Noah leans into my ear. “I hope she goes to sleep when we get to the house. I prefer not to be in the middle of their arguing.”

“It’s none of our business. As long as they don’t involve us.”

“I’m tired. You think we can go?”

JC must have read our minds, because he breaks himself away from Brianna and heads over to where we’re sitting.

“What’s up?” I ask.

“Want to go back to my house? The party is winding down.”

“Sure. We’ll follow you.”

We must wait for several minutes before they retrieve our cars and I hear Brianna complaining about how incompetent the valets are. I think she is a spoiled brat. How would she know what it’s like to work for a living? She even has the nerve to tell JC not to tip them when they bring their car around. I reach into my purse and fish out a ten-dollar bill which I hand to the valet. I see her from the corner of my eye frowning at me. I hope she takes the hint.

“Lexi, I wish we could be alone tonight.”

“I know Noah, I’m sorry. If I had the energy to drive home, I would.”

“As long as we can leave early tomorrow.”

“I’ll let JC know that we are.”
