“Are you ready?” JC asked.

“I think so. I hope Mr. Kingston is happy. Do we need to fine-tune anything?”

“We don’t have time. Vincent told me that Kingston pushed the meeting up to nine. He should be here in less than an hour.”

I started to panic, but I should be used to it since this happened all the time at my previous two jobs.

“Are you taking the lead?”

“I think you should. You know the copy. I can join in if you need it.”

“But I’m not sure I can handle the lead on such short notice,” I protested.

JC crossed his arms and smirked. “Still lack confidence in yourself.”

“Fuck you,” I murmured under my breath.

“Is that an invitation?”

I shook my head as I walked out of JC’s office. Bastard.

Chapter 4

I was fuming as I muddled my way through the meeting with Mr. Kingston. JC had thrown me under the bus, a common occurrence during our past relationship. Luckily, I had enough knowledge about Kingston hand creams to work my way through. He seemed happy enough, especially when I promised to get the new copy to him by Friday. I would have to get the art department involved to draw up some graphics to coincide.

I hadn’t seen JC since after the meeting, Vincent wanted to speak with him. I was sitting in my office with the door closed, trying to rub away a stress headache. I asked Nikki to hold my calls and I lay down on the couch trying to regain my composure. If I saw JC now, I would lash out and I didn’t want to do that since he was my superior.

This was just one more reason why I was glad we were no longer together. JC rarely took accountability for issues that went wrong in our personal and business relationship. He would accuse me of things that were his fault, and I was stupid enough to allow it. Love makes you do funny things.

My desk phone rang, and I ignored it. Dammit Nikki, I told you to hold my calls. A minute later, my cell phone buzzed. The only reason I got up from the couch was that I wondered if it was Noah. He could calm me. I was hoping it was, but my anger flared when I saw a text from JC.

Come to my office. I’m sorry. I fucked up again.

I couldn’t resist, so I texted him back.

Yes, you did fuck up yet again. You wanted to know why it would never work with us, here’s your answer. You never take accountability for anything. You’re the vice president of marketing; it was your job to clean up this mess.

My finger lingered over the send button, then I deleted the message, stood up, and went to JC’s office. His door was partially open, and I walked in, slammed the door a little too hard and stalked toward his desk with my hands clenched.

He smiled with amusement, then as he surveyed my face, the smile disappeared.

“Lexi, I know I…”

I cut him off by holding up my hand.

“JC, you’re my superior. You were there to help clean up this mess that my predecessor created. You had a responsibility and took none of it. This is why we aren’t together. Your looks and charm can only get you so far.”

I was spent and sat down in the black leather chair in front of his desk.

“I know. I just knew you could handle it. You worked on the copy, and your skills are impeccable when it comes to that.”

“Suppose I didn’t have any extra ideas? You would’ve made me look like a jerk in front of Vincent, not to mention the client. You can’t do this to me again or I’m quitting.”

A look of fear crossed his face, and I inwardly smiled. I’d saved his ass and I wondered what Vincent had said to him, so I asked.

“What happened with Vincent?”

“He congratulated me on hiring you.”
