“Oh, so you get a feather in your cap for me saving your ass?”

“I don’t see it like that, but I’ll agree because I know you’re angry.”

“JC, why shouldn’t I be?”

“Think of it as trial by fire. You got through your first meeting without faltering.”

“No thanks to you,” I mumbled.

“I would like to take you to dinner tonight.”

“I can’t.”

“Why, what else do you have to do? Noah is still away, and so is Brianna. Don’t make me eat alone. I hate it.”

I know he did, and I also know he was trying to change the subject. There was no use arguing. It was over, and we had been successful.

“If I agree, then you’re paying.”

“I invited you, didn’t I?”

“Fine. I have work to do. I not only have to get this copy done for Mr. Kingston by Friday, but I have to work on the Camilla Cosmetics campaign. I need to coordinate with the art department.”

“I’ll leave you to it. I need to do a few things myself.”

I rose from my chair and headed to my office. My head was starting to pound even harder, probably from the limited sleep I had in the last two nights. I couldn’t wait for Noah to come home.

I buzzed Nikki and told her to come to my office. I needed help setting up a few things, and she could coordinate my schedule with the art department. This was the first time I had a dedicated assistant and I loved it. When she arrived, we got down to business.

At lunch, I shut my office door, turned out the lights, and lay down on my couch. I was exhausted and it was barely 1:00 PM. Right after I shut my eyes, my cell rang. I fumbled for it and swiped the button to answer.

“Lexi, how are you?”

“Noah, I miss you. Come home soon.”

“I have some good news. I should be home tomorrow, not Friday.”

I thanked the heavens. I needed him.

“That’s wonderful to hear. Why did the schedule change?”

“My client’s wife has a family issue. The earliest flight they could get was tomorrow morning. So I should be back in New York by the afternoon.”

“I’m so happy. How is Mexico?”

“Hot, and I got sunburned yesterday. I forgot sunscreen.”

“How is work? Are you enjoying being the big boss?”

If he only knew.

“I’m not actually the big boss, that’s JC. But I am enjoying the work. I had my presentation this morning.”

“And?”

“It went well, a few hiccups.”

“Hiccups?”
