“Lexi, I really appreciate you staying. I never would’ve gotten this done without you.”

“That’s why you hired me, isn’t it?”

“Part of the reason.”

“You had other reasons?”

My heart started to pound, hoping JC wouldn’t say what I thought he would.

“I wanted to be friends again. I missed you.”

“I’m not sure if that’s a good idea.”

“Why? I don’t bite.”

I started to feel uncomfortable, mainly because I remembered that he most certainly did bite. Many a morning, I woke up with small red marks from his teeth while we were making love.

“I know, but our history and all. I’m not sure our spouses would like us to be friends.”

“Brianna doesn’t know. At least I don’t think she does.”

“Why wouldn’t you tell her you were working with your ex-fiancée?”

“Because she doesn’t need to know. It would only create more problems. We argue a lot.”

I felt empathetic toward him. Married less than a year, and they argued all the time. Nevertheless, a warning voice whispered in my head.

“I’m sorry. Maybe you should seek counseling.”

“I think we’re well past that. I let Brianna go on the girl’s trip because I thought maybe some distance would help.”

“Is it?”

“It was until I looked at our credit card statement. Brianna loves to spend. I’m not a multi-millionaire like her father. I can’t have frivolous spending.”

We walked to the elevator, and I wasn’t sure what to tell him. As we headed out the door to the building, JC grabbed my hand and pulled me against his chest for a hug. I was taken aback by his actions, but it felt good being in his arms. If I were any other employee, a sexual harassment suit would be in order. But I wasn’t any other employee. I was JC’s former fiancée.

“Thank you for listening.”

He kissed me on my forehead, and as he let me go from his embrace, stroked my cheek with his fingers. I resisted the urge to close my eyes and relish his touch.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said.

“Yes, fine.”

As JC headed off in the other direction, I needed to lean against the concrete planters in front of the building. He still made me weak in the knees. After I regained my composure, I headed for the subway. The platform was almost deserted except for a young couple leaning against the dirty tiled wall while they kissed and an older man talking to himself. My phone rang while I waited for the next train and seeing who it was, I immediately felt guilt wash over me.

“Noah.”

“Hey babe, sorry to call you so late. Did I wake you?”

I nervously laughed. “No, I’m waiting for the train.”

“Did you go out?”

“I just got done with work. We have an emergency meeting with a client tomorrow at noon.”

“Don’t you have employees to work on that stuff?”
