“You just want to knock everyone off today, don’t you?”

“Is that a bad thing?”

“No, but remember, we need to tell my parents, and it’s got to be in person.”

JC sighs loudly because my parents aren’t his biggest fans. I don’t care because I love him, and I need to make my own decisions.

“Well, if you’re coming, you should probably get dressed.”

Twenty minutes later, we enter my apartment. Olivia is sitting on the couch painting her toenails with a black polish. She jumps up when she sees us and waddles to pass out hugs.

“I can’t believe it,” she says as she clings to JC.

“Hey girl, look at you! You’re gorgeous.”

I forgot to tell JC Olivia lost weight, and he hasn’t seen her since she got back to New York. I let them have their moment and go to my bedroom to find a pair of panties to wear. I hear her tell him if he breaks my heart, she’ll have his balls. JC nervously laughs but he knows she means it.

After I put on a fresh pair of panties, we go downstairs to Megan’s apartment. It’s 2:00 PM, but when she answers the door, she’s bleary-eyed and her blonde mane is a mess.

“What are you two doing here, together?”

“Let us in, and we’ll tell you.”

She does, and we spend the next half-hour explaining how we’re newly engaged. Her mouth gapes open as the story unfolds. I wasn’t quite sure what her reaction was going to be but it’s positive.

“I didn’t want to say anything, but I’m glad you’re not with asshole anymore.”

“Megan! I thought you liked Noah.”

“I didn’t. I tolerated him for you. He was always a dick to me when you weren’t around. It’s why I left your apartment when you weren’t home.”

“How come you never said anything?”

“Because you loved him. I didn’t have to be the one to marry him.”

“Yes, but you’re my family, and you should have said something.”

“It doesn’t matter. I definitely love this new fiancé.”

“I’m glad because you’re coming with me to tell mom, dad, and Emma.”

“You mean you need a buffer.”

“Megan, I need you. We need you.”

“Fine. When is this going to take place?”

We decide to visit my parents next weekend. I need to break the news about Noah during the week and spring the news about JC when we see them.

The work week goes quietly since it’s August and business is slow. I find it hard to concentrate with JC nearby since I want him all the time. At night, we usually spend it at his apartment and most of that time is spent making love.

On Friday night, he’s secretive and tells me he wants to take me somewhere. I’m not sure if he means out to dinner or another place, but I go along without questioning. We take a cab right from the office and it pulls up to a small jewelry store. The window is dark, but JC places a call and a little man with thick glasses comes to the door to let us in.

JC introduces him to me as Mr. Juri Polsky. He shakes my hand and ushers us into the back of the store, which is his workspace.

“Mr. Polsky has been my father’s jeweler for years. I asked him to do a special favor for me.”

I’m misty-eyed as the man picks up a small black velvet box, popping it open. The ring inside is a square cut two-carat diamond mounted on a simple platinum band. He hands it to JC, who plucks it out of the box and holds it for me to slip on my finger. It fits perfectly.
