“Go to a movie with me tonight.”

I put down my pen. “Excuse me?”

“A movie. You know friends do go to movies together. We haven’t been out for a while. I’m sure Noah can spare you for a few hours.”

It’s Friday, and I don’t want to be alone. Olivia and Megan are going out to a club, but I declined their invitation. The last thing I want to do is be pawed over by some sweaty guy with his shirt half unbuttoned.

“I’ll ask him and let you know. What do you want to see?”

“Pride and Prejudice is being shown at the Cineplex. My treat.”

The Cineplex often played older movies for a five-dollar ticket price. Pride and Prejudice was one of my favorites, and I’m surprised JC remembered. When it came out, I dragged him to it several times until he begged me to stop.

“You remembered.”

“Sure, I did. When I saw they were showing it, I wanted to take you. It’s only for this weekend. Please say you’ll go.”

Since I don’t want to stay home by myself indulging in butter pecan ice cream and watching television, I should go.

“Let me text Noah.”

I put on a good show for JC by texting Megan and asking her to play the part. She texts me back so he can hear the ping, and I let JC know I can go.

“Great. I’ll pick you up at seven.”

This is a wrinkle I forgot about. He can’t get me because I no longer live with Noah.

“How about I meet you at the Cineplex?”

“What’s the problem? Noah might get jealous.”

“JC, the Cineplex or nothing.”

“Fine, I’ll meet you in front of the Cineplex at seven. The movie starts at 7:30.”

He leaves my office, and I begin to feel nervous. Why? I’ve been out with JC before. Of course, that was when I was engaged. Now I’m single again and the sexual tension I always feel when he’s around is lingering in the air.

The Cineplex is busy, and I search around for JC. I finally find him standing near the front door. He’s casually dressed in worn jeans with a few frayed areas. His t-shirt is form fitting and shows the carved muscles of his torso below. I've also dressed casually in a pair of dark blue capris and a pink t-shirt.

“I thought you stood me up,” he says as I approach.

“It’s only 7:05.”

“I already bought the tickets. Let’s go inside.”

He offers his arm for me to take, but I shake my head. A look of disappointment crosses his handsome face and instead he opens the door for me.

“We should get some snacks. Do you want something?”

“I should buy them since you got the tickets.”

“Nope. I said my treat. What do you want?”

“Some snowcaps and a bottle of water.”

We wait in line, and I can’t help leaning close to him to smell his cologne. He always smells so good. I want contact with him but I’m afraid where it will take us. After we get our snacks, we head for the theater. It’s not very crowded, even for a Friday night. We decide to sit almost in the back row. No one is behind us and the next closest people are four rows ahead of us.

The movie starts, and I concentrate on my snowcaps and the screen in front of me. The theater is chilly, and I look up to see we’re under the vent. I hug myself to see if I can warm up.
