He picked up the tin and held it out to me. I thanked him and took the last piece of food out of the tin.

“Lexi, do you ever wonder what it would have been like if we had gotten married?”

“I try not to.”

The look on his face was full of regret.

“I guess that’s my fault. I fucked it all up. I’m sorry it ended so badly.”

“You don’t have to keep apologizing. I once wanted to be married to you, but I got over it. It took time, but it passed. I’m very happy with Noah.”

“I wanted to talk to you about calling me JC. It’s fine when we’re alone, but everyone knows me as Camden. Can you try to call me that when other people are around?”

“If you can call me Alexa when others are around.”

“When did you start using Alexa?”

“At Richards. Only my family and Noah call me Lexi.”

“How is your family? If I remember, your sister Megan was studying for her masters in biology.”

“She received her degree a few years ago and worked for Darwin Chemical in Philadelphia.”

“That’s great. And your other sister, Emma?”

“She’s finding herself. First, it was acting, now writing. Since she’s only twenty-one, my parents let it go. She’ll get it together one of these days.”

“Your parents, how are they?”

“They still hate you; I’m sorry to say. My mother was not happy to hear I now work with you, well, for you.”

JC pursed his lips. “I don’t blame her.”

“What about your family? Your brother, Hunter?”

“Hunter works for my father’s company. He pretends he loves it, but I know different. My father, as you know, can be difficult. It’s the very reason why I chose not to work there. I’m the disappointment of the family.”

I frowned. “Don’t say that. You’ve accomplished quite a bit on your own.”

“Have I? Do you think I didn’t have help getting this position? My father has a lot of pull in this town. The name Lawson opens doors all over.”

“I think your merits say it all. You’re hardworking and intelligent. I can remember many nights at Carver when you stayed to complete an assignment.”

“You did the same. You deserved the job, not me.”

“Water under the bridge.”

I stood up and started to clear the table of the empty tins. JC helped me clean up, and in a couple of minutes we were back in our chairs being professional again. Treading toward personal talk only made me wish it could be like it used to be.

At eleven, I decided it was time to end work for the evening. I was yawning every few seconds, and my eyes were getting droopy. I had rewritten the copy that would more than likely satisfy Mr. Kingston.

“I have to go, JC. I’m falling asleep.”

“I think we’ve put in a good amount of work. Tomorrow, I just need to set this up on the video screen, and we can work with the copy you rewrote. I think Mr. Kingston will be pleased.”

“I hope so.”

I shut down my laptop and righted the paperwork in the folder. JC went to his office to get his briefcase, and we met in the hallway as I was locking my office door.
