“Everything. You, your daughter, this situation.”

“What me? I’ve been trying to make it up to you.”

“You could’ve texted me and let me know where you were. I was getting ready to call Brice. You had me worried.”

Noah puts his hands on his hips. “You did the same thing last week.”

“You knew where I was. I lost track of time.”

“But you didn’t let me know you’d be late.”

“I think you were more worried about me being with Matty. You cheated on me, not the other way around. Yet I feel you have no trust in me. Also, you told Rory that I forbid you to see her on her birthday?”

Noah shook his head. “I didn’t actually say that.”

“She said you did. You make me look like a shrew. Maybe I should tell her why I forbade you to go. How would that look?”

“You’re all worked up. Calm down.”

“Noah, if you tell me to calm down once more, I’m walking out of here.”

A look of fear crosses his face, but then he smirks.

“Come on, Lexi; I love you. Don’t make threats you have no intention of keeping.”

I’m fuming. I want to punch his beautiful face. Make his perfectly straight nose crooked. I take a big gulp of wine, emptying the glass and brush past him. Noah follows me as if he can’t sense how pissed I am.

“I need to sleep in the bedroom tonight, preferably in bed with you.”

“You’re really pushing it. We’ll see. I understand you want to make it look like everything is perfect in front of your daughter, but it’s not. In fact, I think I’m going to Megan’s. I need a break from all this shit.”

“I think that you’re…”

I put my hand up to stop him. “Don’t you dare say that I’m overreacting.”

Noah’s quiet, and I grab my purse, cell phone, and slip on my shoes before I’m out the door. I can’t deal with him and now his obnoxious daughter. This wrinkle puts a whole new perspective on how life will be with Rory in the city. Yes, she will be living in her own place near New York University but I’m sure she’ll come by.

It’s early evening and still warm. Instead of heading to Megan’s, I turn and go toward JC’s apartment. I need an ego boost, and he’s just the person to give it to me. I hope he’s home and not out on some date. I decide to call him before I get too far in case I need to walk the other way to my sister’s. He answers and he sounds groggy.

“JC, it’s me.”

“Me who?”

“Stop playing. You know who this is.”

“If it’s that incredibly hot, sexy and gorgeous woman named Lexi, then yes, I do.”

“Very funny. I needed a break. Can I come by?”

His once groggy voice is now clear. “Absolutely. I’ll see you in a little while.”

It takes me ten minutes to walk to his place. The sidewalks along Central Park are busy with people out enjoying the warm summer evening. When I get to JC’s, he answers the door in a pair of basketball shorts and a tank top that frames his muscular torso. I look away before he catches me ogling him.

“Hey, come on in. What’s up?”

I tell JC what happened a short while ago and why I needed a break.

“I’m sorry. I know you haven’t been happy lately. I can see it in your face and the way you act. Is it his daughter and what he did or something else?”
