Noah’s with Rory and they’re laughing, their hands full of packages from stores on Fifth Avenue, Saks, Victoria’s Secret, Anthropologie, Versace, and Hollister.

“Wow, you two really went on a shopping spree.”

Rory scowls at me but isn’t rude. “I needed clothes for school.”

“I was wondering where you were, Noah.”

He doesn’t look at me. “Sorry, lost track of time.”

Maybe I should throw a tantrum since he did the same thing when I was with Matty longer than expected. But I don’t want to make a scene in front of Rory, so I keep my mouth shut. Noah ignores me and goes to the guest room to leave the bags. When he comes back, he lets me know Rory will be staying with us until Tuesday. I’m not thrilled.

“I have to go for a dress fitting tomorrow. Olivia just arrived back from California, and she’s going with me. I want to spend some time with her.”

Noah’s face is passive. “It’s not a problem. I can spend the day with Rory. She wanted to do some more shopping, this time for some items for her new apartment.”

Really? Haven’t you bought her enough?

“We can meet back up for dinner. I might bring Olivia with me.”

“I’ll discuss it with you later,” he says and goes to answer his ringing office phone, leaving me with Rory.

“So, how was your day?”

Rory frowns at me. “I’m not sure I want to talk to you.”

I’m shocked, and I return her frown. “Excuse me?”

“My father told me you forbid him to see me on my birthday.”

“That’s not true. I said no such thing.”

And maybe if he didn’t stick his cock in your mother, I wouldn’t have had to say no. I’m pissed off that Noah would even tell Rory something like that.

“He said he couldn’t come because you told him no. Ask him.”

“I will, later on.”

She kicks off her shoes and leaves them in the middle of the living room.

“Rory, I’d appreciate it if you put those in the closet.”

She lowers her voice. “You’re not my mother, and I don’t have to listen to what you say.”

I grind my teeth. “But this is my home, and I want it kept in order.”

“This is my father’s home, not yours. You live here.”

I can’t believe she’s acting this way since she’s seventeen. I feel like I’m dealing with a spoiled little girl. My anger is beginning to boil over, and before I can reply, Noah returns from his office. He can see I’m upset.

“Would you please tell your daughter to put her shoes in the closet?”

“Rory, put your shoes away.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

When Noah’s back is turned, Rory sticks her tongue out at me. I’ve had enough. I went to the kitchen to pour a glass of wine and sit out on the terrace. The last thing I needed after a full week of work was to deal with this little brat. A few minutes later, Noah joins me.

“Lexi, what’s wrong?”
