He looked up at her, confused. “Sorry for what?”

“For last night. I should have said no.”

“Do you think I regret what we did? I don’t. I’m glad you agreed.”

She felt a sense of relief because she wasn’t sure if he was angry at her. He smiled at her and reached out to pat her hand.

“All that sexual tension is out of the way now, and we can concentrate on the wedding.”

He got up and took his coffee to his room, all the while feeling sad because he could never be with her again. At least he got to enjoy her for one night. Tomorrow she would be his stepsister, and it would just be too weird.

She finished her coffee and went into her room to shower. She heard the shower on his side running at the same time. They came out to the living room both fully dressed, and she checked her watch. Their parents probably were up already and getting ready to go to the church to meet with the pastor.

“Do you want to go up to the house to see if they need us for anything?”

“Nah, I’m sure they’re fine. I was going to go into town to see one of my friends. Do you want to come?”

“I probably will go over to Brooke’s to see William. That kid loves me.”

I can’t blame him for that, David thought.

Ava escaped the awkwardness by going up to the main house to see if they needed her. The house was abuzz with family members finishing breakfast. She helped Natalia clean up the kitchen, said goodbye to her family and left to go to Brooke’s house. William was excited to see her and clung to her leg when she entered the house. She picked him up and planted so many kisses on his face that he had to brush her away. She put him down to sit with Brooke, who wasn’t looking so well, prompting Ava to ask her what was wrong.

“I still have morning sickness. I didn’t have it this bad with William. I hope I don’t spend most of the day tomorrow in the bathroom.”

Ava offered to take William with her back to her father’s house. She knew that he would love spending time with her and it would give Brooke some needed rest. He was full of energy and Brooke didn’t have much to give right now. Brooke agreed, and Ava helped her disconnect the car seat from her van. She put the car seat in her rental and then strapped William into it. He waved to Brooke as they pulled out of the driveway.

Ava took William back to her father’s house, and he became the center of attention with everyone. Gabby and Peter took a special interest in him. Suzanne’s children were older, and it had been a long time since they had a grandchild of this age. He became attached to Gabby and sat on her lap while she stroked his hair. It was late morning, and it was time for his nap. He ended up falling asleep in her arms. She would have made a good grandmother for the children that Ava and Xander would have had. Ava turned away because it made her upset to think about what she had lost, what everyone had lost.

Seeing that William was in good hands, she went back down to the pool house. She felt the overwhelming urge to cry, and if it happened, she didn’t want to do it in front of everyone. She hoped that David wasn’t there just in case. He wasn’t, and she was able to calm herself.

Samantha and Robert were due at the house within a couple of hours, and she was anxious to spend much needed time with her best friend. In the past few months, they had so little time with each other. They both had things going on in their lives that kept them apart. Eventually, Sam would have children, and they would drift further apart. But for now, she was going to try to spend as much time with her as possible.

She went to her room and removed the dress from the garment bag that she had brought. It was a bit wrinkled, and she wanted to iron it. She heard David come in the main door and called to him. He came into her room and sat on the bed watching her iron.

“Is that the dress you’re wearing tomorrow?”

“Yes, I thought I would go simple.”

She held up the black dress for him to see. It was short, and the front looked as if the neckline would show some cleavage. He couldn’t wait to see it on her.

“It’s a nice dress. Do you think you could iron my shirt? I am the worst at ironing and usually, put my shirt in the bathroom while I shower. It doesn’t get all the wrinkles out, but at least I look presentable.”

She told him to bring her the shirt, and she would take care of it. She ironed it quickly and held it up for him to see. He was amazed at how pressed it looked.

“How did you learn to do such a great job at ironing?”

“After my mom passed away, I spent a lot of time with Natalia. She taught me how to iron, and I eventually used to do it for my father and Michael.”

He smiled at her and took the shirt on the hanger back to his room.

When she came out of her room, he was making a sandwich and asked if she wanted half, she nodded and handed it to her.

“Mmmm, this is yummy.”

He reached out to wipe a small dab of mayonnaise from her cheek and offered his finger to her. She took it between her lips and licked it off. He stared at her, and she realized she made a mistake in doing that.

“Sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.”
