Nate dropped his head and nodded, then walked down the hallway. At the end he stopped, putting his fist against the wall. Not an angry punch, but a resigned punch. It almost looked like he was holding himself up.

Colby waited. She hoped, despite herself, for something. That he would have some words that would allow her to forgive him. Her eyes brimmed with tears and her chest burned. She hated everything about this moment.

She needed him to say something, anything. A grand gesture. Even a small one. The truth. Something that would allow her to let him stay. She could forgive him, even now. She would. If he would only tell her the truth or give her something to hold onto. She waited.

Nate did not turn around. “You deserve better,” he said, finally.

And then he walked away.

Colby practically ran into the master bedroom, slamming the door. She locked it behind her, not that she thought he would come after her. He could have done that already. But he didn’t. Not then and not now.

The tears she’d been trying to hold back fell, hot and heavy on her cheeks. Her body felt rattled with the overwhelming wash of emotions. She had lost Nate. Again.

At least this time she knew where he was and why. But as she bent down, pressing her tear-stained cheek to the carpet, she wasn’t sure that knowing was better after all.
