Debbi pointed a finger at her. “It stops now. Whether it’s this guy or another guy you go out with. We’re not saying hide it. Just not the first time you meet a guy.”

“They’re my ovaries! I’ll talk about them if I want to!”

Colby hadn’t meant to shout. She slapped a hand over her mouth. Their corner of the restaurant got eerily silent for a moment and she could feel people staring. As soon as people around them picked up their conversations again, all of them burst out laughing, Colby included. She fanned her hot cheeks with her hands.

“I cannot believe you just shouted ‘ovaries’ in a restaurant,” Jane said.

“I can,” Debbi said, laughing. “But let this be the last time. Pinky swear: no more ovary talk!”

“We should make a pact!” Kara said.

“We aren’t twelve,” Colby said. “No pacts. No pinky swearing.”

“Just promise you won’t do it anymore,” Jane said. “You’re not saving the guy heartache. You’re sabotaging all your relationships. Ever since—”

Colby interrupted her before she could say Nate’s name. She knew it was coming. “I promise to think about not talking about my ovaries on my first date with Napper.”

“Napper? What the heck kind of name is that?” Kara asked. “Do you not know his real name?”

“What’s your username?” Debbi asked.

“I’m Sewzy, spelled like ‘sew’ because, you know: sewing.”

“You are such a dork,” Debbi said.

“Maybe Napper has nappy hair?” Jane suggested, wrinkling her nose.

“Or likes to take naps.”

They were all laughing again and ordered desserts when the waiter came back. For a few hours, Colby was able to shake off the heaviness of her worries. But she still didn’t feel like messaging Napper, even when she finally got back to Liz’s house. It wasn’t like him to not say goodnight. They had both been silent. She wondered what his reasons were.

Lying in bed, Colby pulled out her phone and looked at the First Sight app. Her past with Nate had run right into her present in a messy collision. She didn’t want a past non-relationship to affect what was developing with Napper.

But she realized with a jolt that when she thought of Napper now, she was picturing Nate’s face.
