She’s the best vibe.
An hour of driving and we reach a secluded spot in the mountains that I know about. I park. Then I walk around and open her door.
“You didn’t bring me here to murder me, did you?”
“Never.”
“You promise?”
“I promise, love.”
We grab a blanket and the picnic basket I hid in the back of the Jeep. Then we spread out the blanket in the center of the clearing, set down the picnic basket, and lay down.
“The stars are beautiful tonight,” she says.
“Not as beautiful as you.”
“Wow. How long did you practice that line?”
“Not long enough, apparently. Have you ever been on a midnight picnic before?”
“Nope. This is a first. Promise.”
“Me too.”
We stay where we are, lying under the stars, and we look at the sky together.
Somehow, in this moment, I’ve never felt so cared for.
I’ve never felt so damn adored.

MOVIE NIGHTS WITH BEATRICE are so much fun. There’s nothing we like quite as much as getting bottles of wine, cupcakes, and a stack of horror movies. We watch them on DVD, of course. There’s something really different from watching a movie on DVD instead of streaming. I don’t know if it’s the quality or the sound, but I’m into it.
Tonight, we’ve paired three bottles of wine with three plates of cupcakes.
“Are you sure we’ve done this correctly?” Beatrice asks.
“It’s my first time,” I shrug. “Chocolate cupcakes, vanilla cupcakes, and red velvet cupcakes go with any kind of wine, right? It’s impossible to mess it up.”
“Okay, you’re right. I agree. Impossible to mess up,” Beatrice says. She nods.
We start with the chocolate cupcakes.
“To us,” I say, holding one up.
Lemon comes over, climbs onto Beatrice’s lap, and meows loudly.
“You can’t have a cupcake,” she tells the cat.
“Poor kitty.” I reach for Lemon. I scratch him behind the ears for a few minutes until he calms down. Eventually, he settles on the couch between us.
It’s going to be a good night.
