“You want me to come home with you?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“What? I can fuck you at work but not my house?”

“That just feels like it’s getting serious,” she says.

“Maybe it is.” I didn’t mean to say that.

For a long moment, Alex is silent, but she finally nods.

“Okay,” she says. “I’ll come with you.”

Once we’re in the SUV, we start heading in the direction of my home. Downtown Siren City is still bustling.

“Where do you live?”

“In a house.”

“North Siren City?”

“Yeah,” I nod. It’s where most of the business people live. There are larger houses up north, which means you can get a gated area and not have to worry about paparazzi or random people showing up from your past who want things from you.

“Cool.”

“You?”

“I live with Beatrice,” she says. “You know that.”

“I don’t actually know where she lives.”

“Really? You two don’t hang?”

“Not outside of Christmas and Easter.”

“Interesting.”

“My family tends to have its issues,” I admit. “Then again, I think everyone does.”

“True,” Alex nods.

“What about your family?”

“Hmm?”

“You haven’t told me much about them. Are you close with your folks?”

“No,” she says. It’s a solid sort of answer, and I’ve been around enough people to know that she’s shutting down this line of questioning. That’s fine. I can ask her about something else.

“Well, when you’re not at work, what are you doing?”

“Trying to find a teaching job,” she blurts out. Then she presses a hand over her mouth.

“What?” My blood runs cold. She’s looking for another job? But I need her here. She’s supposed to be my assistant. Together, we basically run the company, but I need her. There’s even a part of me that kind of hopes Damien doesn’t return so that Alex and I can keep on working together.

Only, she’s basically just told me that’s not going to happen.
