She rolls her eyes. “He referred to his car as a woman on eight different occasions, Alex. This is weird because you went on exactly four dates. That’s a two-mentions per-date average, which is worse because that’s just during the pre-date time when he was picking you up.”

“Okay, maybe my dating history has been sketchy.”

“That’s putting it lightly.”

“Damn! Point taken.” I don’t want the point to be taken, but it is.

“Look, all I want to know is if he was good to you.”

“Yes.”

“And I want to know if you’re going to be doing this again.”

“With Ryan? I don’t think it’s a good idea, but yes, I want to do it again.”

She leans forward and uses the most sarcastic tone I’ve ever heard in my life.

“You don’t think that sleeping with a billionaire boss is a good idea? Why on Earth not?” Beatrice winks, gets up, and heads back to our little galley kitchen. I let her go, and I allow myself to sit on the couch for just a moment before I get up and go join her.

“What are we making today?” I ask, changing the subject. She passes a bowl toward me.

“Anything we want, Alex. The sky’s the limit for us today.”

And I know that somehow, she’s right.

22.

Ryan

Alex and I have broken the boundaries of personally acceptable behavior, so I don’t see a reason to pretend like we haven’t. Each day for two weeks, we’re inseparable. I use my lunch breaks to devour her pussy. We burn off steam after particularly tricky business meetings by fucking in my office. There are moments after work, too: stolen pieces of time where we sneak out to the parking garage and make love in the back of my SUV. It’s something teenagers would do, which is fitting because she makes me feel young.

When was the last time I felt like this?

I can’t remember the last time I felt happy or content. Ever since my father died, things have felt awkward and rough, but with Alex, the world seems lighter. Fresher.

We’re in the elevator heading down to the car one day after work when I invite her home.

“Come with me,” I say.

“Come with you where? A bar?”

“Home.”

She turns, looking up at me.
