Chapter 15 - Maddox

How do you ask a woman to marry you? No, that’s not what I was wondering. What I meant was: how do you ask a woman that you’ve only known for three days to marry you?

As Lacie dozed off on top of my chest and I ran my fingers through her golden hair, the thought played on a loop in my head.

Was it just because I wanted my inheritance?

No.

I knew it wasn’t it. It was Lacie. I wanted her. I wanted her forever, and I wanted only her. I never wanted her to feel any cock but mine, and I never wanted any other woman but her. No other woman to taste or feel or hold.

But how could I possibly ask that?

“Marry me.”

Just like that, I guess.

Lacie moved, her eyelids fluttering open prettily. She smiled and frowned at the same time. “What?”

“Marry me.”

She shifted her weight, lifting her head. Her hands were on my chest to support herself. She picked up a rose petal that was stuck to me and flicked it away. “You heart is racing,” she said. “Are you being serious?”

“I’m supposed to get married, and I only want you.”

“You’re supposed to get married?”

“It’s a long story.”

Lacie laughed. “Well, apparently we have ‘till death’, so I’ve got time.”

“Is that a yes?”

“No! I mean, I don’t know! This is crazy, Maddox! What are you talking about?”

“I’ll give you a hundred grand.”

Her eyebrows drew together. “Are you okay? What is going on? You’ve known me for three days. Are you like high off sex or something? Or high off something else? You want to give me a hundred grand to marry you?”

“I’m high off you, that’s a distinct possibility. But I’m serious. My lawyer told me that in order to inherit the money my parents left me, I need to marry someone. My sister is trying to get the will thrown out, so I don’t have much time. You’re the top candidate right now,” I grinned.

Lacie laughed, smacking my chest and rolling her eyes. “Don’t I feel special. You sure know how to woo a woman.”

She frowned, staring deep in my eyes. “You’d really give me a hundred grand?”

Something stung in my chest. I knew it was crazy, but I wanted her to marry me for me, not because I would pay her to do it. But how could I ask that of someone I hardly knew?

“Yeah,” I replied simply.

She blew a breath out of her mouth. “I could use a hundred grand,” she said. “That would take a lot of stress off.” Her eyes drifted off, and sadness clouded her face. I’d never seen that in her before.

“I’ll give you two hundred,” I said.

Lacie laughed. “If you insist.” She sat up beside me, running her hand through her hair. My eyes drifted to her bare breasts, and I ran my fingers along the side of one of them. She shivered, and then shook her head.

“That’s insane. I can’t marry you.”

“Why would a hundred grand take stress off you?” I asked, peering at her face.
