He sighs. “She did. She took it upon herself to take the focus off of you and me.”

My mouth gapes open. “Why?”

He shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter. I fired her.”

“Good.”

“Buuuut… I hired her again.” When I open my mouth to argue, he presses his finger across my lips to stop me. “She’s good at her job and she knows she messed up.” I roll my eyes. “We hire PR people to help us with our image in the public eye. Sometimes that isn’t always what we think our best interest is. But she was wrong here. Did your PR person tell you that Bree called to get information to you from me?”

I do a double-take. A sudden coldness hits my core. I trusted April, and she knew I was upset over Ryker. “No. What the heck?”

“Despite being pissed, I understood. You had a lot on your plate the last couple of weeks. You didn’t need relationship stuff to deal with.”

“That doesn’t mean she gets to make those decisions for me. What if I had written you off and found another guy?”

“After fucking three weeks? Then obviously I wouldn’t have meant anything to you.” His expression hardens and I regret suggesting it.

I slide my fingers up his arm. “Ryker, you mean everything to me. I couldn’t have moved on from you after three weeks. It devastated me that you weren’t texting or calling me.”

“Sorry.” He falls on the bed, brings his hands behind his head and stares up to the ceiling. “I can’t believe I didn’t double check the number.”

I straddle him. “Well, if you hadn’t been so stubborn about climbing down the ladder like you were a spy, you might have.” He laughs and moves his hands up my thighs. I watch them inch up. “So, is Bree on board with this? Or is that another obstacle?”

He licks his bottom lip and raises a brow. “She found you in Nashville for me.”

“Oh. She deserves a bonus.” I play with the hem of my shirt, lifting it off my head and throwing it to the ground behind me.

“And a damn good one,” he rasps.

Chapter Forty

Ryker

Why does she spring this shit on me at the last minute?

“Can’t you get someone else to do it? One of your other poster boys?” I’m tired and want to see Aspen. Thanks to my overzealous PR rep trying to work me to death, I haven’t seen her in three weeks. If anything, it’s given her time to spend with her mom and sister.

I’m jonesing hard. I’m ready for her to move in with me. It won’t be much of a change since she spends the night at my place when I’m in town.

She lets out a humorless laugh. “No. We need to do everything we can to fix your hairbrained idea to admit to something you didn’t do. Maybe next time, you’ll keep your mouth shut and let your teammate take the fall.”

I sigh, scraping my hand across my chin. Off-season is usually fun. Not this one. “Fine.” I relent to the public relation event, knowing when Bree sets these things up, I’m not getting out of it. “What time and where?”

“I knew you’d see it my way,” she says with a little more excitement than I expected. “Eleven thirty on Friday. I’ll send you the appointment.”

“This Friday?” I ask, surprised she’s only giving me two days’ notice. She said it was soon, but I didn’t expect this soon.

“Yep.”

“Got it,” I respond dryly and hang up. At least it’s in the city. I’ll still be home tomorrow night, balls deep in the woman I can’t get out of my head.

“You can’t be serious?”

“I’m sorry, Ryker,” she says into the phone. Don’t get mad.

“I just thought since we haven’t seen each other in three weeks that you’d want to hang out with me tonight.”
