chapter

fifty-four

Meg is fast, but I’m faster.

I close in on her as she darts past our security. Behind me, Ronan roars at the guys, forcing them to make a path so we can follow our omega.

My mind races as fast as my feet, wondering what the hell is happening.

Is she spiking?

Or having some sort of episode?

The first thing I notice as I sprint onto the field behind her is silence. The solemn sort of quiet that doesn’t have any place in a football stadium. Unless, of course, someone is severely?—

Hurt.

It all makes horrible, perfect sense seconds later. My staff are gathered in a tight circle on the field. Coach is hollering at a referee. Theo’s fighting four of our biggest offensive linemen, trying to force his way back out onto the field to be with the man crumpled in a heap on the turf.

Declan.

I’m only ten steps away from Meg, almost close enough to reach out and grab her arm. Part of me is relieved that every player on our team is on their feet, standing to watch the scene unfold; they’re blocking our omega from running right into a hornet’s nest of stressed-out, amped-up alphas.

I should have guessed Meg wouldn’t take that, though. She’s proven, over and over, how tough she can be. How much backbone she has when she needs it.

“Move!”

If I thought the stadium was holding its breath before, I was wrong. One bark from our little omega and every alpha within fifty yards is stone-still.

Fucking hell.

I’ve never heard an omega bark before. Turns out, it’s every bit as effective as the literature suggests. Immediately, the men blocking her path scatter out of the way, their eyes wide.

One of the right tackles scents her first. A growl rips up his throat, freezing Meg where she stands.

Fuck!

I start to run for her again, but she suddenly turns her head, fixing the guy with a glare unlike any I’ve ever seen. Her teeth flash on an answering snarl. “Stay. Back.”

And… no one moves.

Not even me.

By the time Ronan catches up and shoves me forward, releasing me from our omega’s command with a bark of his own, Meg is out on the field.

Someone might actually fucking die if Declan doesn’t get up.

And it might not be me who kills them.

It may be Meg.

Our omega is fierce. She practically runs over every huge alpha in her way, barking commands at them as she goes. By the time she drops to the turf and lands on her knees, I’m fairly certain I’m the only alpha on the field who isn’t rendered immobile by her orders.

Grabbing Theo by the back of his jersey, I yank him out of his stupor. “What the fuck happened?” I demand. “Where were you?”
