Not only did Dani understand what Vincenza had said in Italian—but she also spoke back to Vincenza in perfect Italian as well.

Giselle laid back and breathed long, deep breaths. “Not lots. Two. That’s enough. I’m the one doing all the work here.”

And then another pain snaked through her body. I felt helpless, not knowing what to do. Wanting to make her stop hurting.

I moved the chair beside me closer so I could sit on it. Then I slid my arm behind her shoulders, helping her curve around her belly.

It was then a sparkle caught my eye.

Christ.

She wore a necklace.

With rings strung on it.

My rings.

The rings I gave her.

And she’d been wearing them over her heart.

A beautiful pain shot through my own heart at that knowledge.

“I love you, Giselle. I missed you so fucking much.” My lips touched her hot, sweaty temple, and she smiled through her pain.

She nodded. “I love you, too, Carlo,” she panted out, letting her eyelids fall shut while laying back down again.

And that was all I needed to hear.

She loved me.

Giselle still loved me.

Even after everything.

She loved me. We were going to be okay.

I knew it.

“You’re ready to push,” Vincenza said, the fingers of one hand inside of Giselle. “This won’t take long.”

Ten seconds later, Giselle curled up again, this time pushingwith all her might. “Fuck, it’s burning like goddamn motherfucking hell,” she burst out with nearly every expletive known to humankind. And coming from Giselle, that meant something.

“Burning is good, my girl. Burning means the end is in sight.” Vincenza’s wise words weren’t exactly comforting.

Giselle pushed and pushed like that for a good fifteen minutes until the baby’s head emerged.

“Do you wish to touch the head?” Vincenza almost cooed as she did things to ready the baby’s entrance into the world.

Giselle’s hand floated down and touched the head of dark, dark hair. She smiled and lay back.

That grin stayed there on her face. Even though she had a baby’s head sticking out of her body.

I leaned forward and kissed her lips gently. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life,” I told her.

She laughed at that. “You are lying, honey. But thank you.”

I let her “honey” absorb into me.
