My given name was Nyan Parker. I legally changed it to Tracker Pace ten years ago. Not wanting to be found, I use both aliases, and sometimes threw a third in. I own five safe houses. It was necessary after they found Susan and killed her. I'd tried so hard to keep her safe. I was so foolish and naive to think I could.

I was finishing putting my bags in the car when I saw Cait jump in the passenger seat. I started shaking my head no.

Walking around to the driver’s seat, I climbed in. Without looking at her, I muttered, “Not a chance.”

That's when I felt the pressure on my wrist. She had a set of furry covered handcuffs. One was clamped on her wrist and now the other on mine. She sat in the passenger seat looking quite proud of himself.

“You know these kind of handcuffs have a little lever that can click them off,” I said as I was turning my wrist over, looking for the piece of metal sticking out so I could slide the furry bracelet off.

“Nope,” she grinned, “I bought these at the army supply store, they are legit,” she giggled. “I glued the fur on so I wouldn't get a scar.” She had a grin from ear to ear. She was quite proud of herself.

“Okay, you have had your fun, now take them off.”

She looked at me very seriously. “I will take them off when we get to your next job.”

I sat there staring at her in shock for far too long. She’d accomplished a feat that no one had ever even attempted in too many years to count.

Cait

I could tell he didn't know what to do. He was stuck between aggravation and amusement.

“I'm going with you,” I replied calmly.

He shook his head no.

“You can tell your head I said yes,” she replied.

“Tell my head?” He chuckled.

“Yes. The annoying thing keeps saying no.” I grinned at him.

“It's too dangerous.” He shrugged like it was the end of the discussion.

“I will stay at the hotel.” I knew I was being belligerent, but I didn't care.

He grumbled a little bit, I could see a war of emotions flitting across his face. “Fine. But you stay in the room. You have to promise not to leave it.” He was emphatic.

I was giddy. “I promise!” Giving him a big kiss, I pulled the key out of my bra and handed it over.

“You are such a brat,” he grunted as he started the car.

“Yes, but I'm your brat,” I smiled with a big cheesy grin.

Chapter Six

Tracker

With this trip, I needed to keep on my toes. I had to keep Cait hidden, keep my job hidden from her, and try not to let her be a major distraction. Distractions only caused mistakes. And mistakes could cost me Cait.

As we drove to the hotel, she chatted about her job.

She was a top aide for Senator Mike Blakely. He was coming down hard on drugs coming into the country and was trying to pass a bill to infiltrate gangs and cartels. This made him a dangerous man, at least for me. I couldn't say that to Cait, though. She wouldn't understand why I thought that. When I asked what a top aide did, she explained. Mostly, she was bogged down with paperwork. She edited his speeches, did research for him, and helped write the bills he passed.

Finally, after four hours on the road, we pulled up to the hotel I had reserved. If I'd known she was coming with me, I would've gotten a nicer room. For me, I didn't need anything fancy. But she was going to be spending most of the time within the four walls, so it needed to be nicer. I would work on getting us a better room. For this one night, we would have to deal with what we had.

Feeling my work phone ping, I pushed it out of my mind. It meant they had another job for me. I never checked the new jobs until the current one was finished. Getting my personal phone out, I shoved my work phone back into the suit case.

My routine was all out of wack. Normally I would go to the hotel and take my luggage in. Then I would unload my hardware on the bed. I always carried a semiautomatic 9mm, a Glock 18 full sized automatic, and a M4 CQB submachine gun.
