“I only belong to me,” I seethed, making sure to put every ounce of stubbornness into my words. “And seeing as I belong to myself, I will decide who will be in charge of my security, and that will remain to be Dimitri. He has been protecting me ever since he was—”

“He’s right, cara,” Dimitri interrupted me.

“Uncle…”

“Papa…” both Martina and I said in unison. Surely, he was not siding with Andres.

Dimitri held up his hand. “I have failed you on more than one occasion. First with your father and brother. Now, I have failed yet again. You almost died, Vina. I had to sit in a waiting room, praying the heavens they would spare your life and take mine instead.”

My chest closed in on itself. His eyes filled with sadness. I hated to see him like this.

“You can take over security for her.” His grave tone filled the room. “I will help you capture the men who took her.”

“Already done,” Andres quipped, only making my uncle frown deeper.

“Ah, I see.”

“Enough,” I said, finally finding my voice. “Leave me with my family, Andres.”

“I’m your family.”

The audacity.

“You know what I mean. Leave. I won’t repeat myself again.”

He stared at me for a moment, looking like he wanted to put up a fight, but he knew better than to try anything right now. We still had a whole mountain of things to sort through, and the last thing he wanted to do was get on my bad side.

He nodded his head in agreement.

Smart man.

“I’ll go deal with work.” He leaned forward and pressed his lips on my temple. “Be good. I have Rodrigo posted outside.”

Before I could even protest, he started for the door. I called after him, but he ignored me, throwing me a wink before leaving.

I balled my fists at my sides because of how insufferable he was. The man knew exactly how to get under my skin, and it annoyed the hell out of me that it actually worked. Why did he have to be so… annoying, and… and… hot?

I turned my attention back to my uncle and Martina, who were both wearing matching faces of curiosity and amusement.

“Not a word,” I bit out.

They both held up their hands in surrender.

“Now, uncle. Why the hell are you listening to Andres?”

I needed to get to the bottom of this. Because the Dimitri I knew would have never given up his duty as my Head of Security. There was something that wasn’t adding up, and I knew that he was hiding something from me.

“There is something I need to tell you about Felipe Valdez.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Andres’ POV

I let my fist fly and connect with the fucker’s face. Blood spattered out of his mouth, his face swelling from my previous hits.

This felt good.

“Ready to talk?” I grabbed the back of his neck and lifted his head. “I will keep you alive as long as I need to, buddy. I can do this all night.”
