Now we had moved past that bombshell, and were basically pretending like it didn’t happen. Well, at least I was. I didn’t have time to fully address and digest what this man had said to me.

I knew I felt something more towards him besides lust and sex. We had chemistry, and it had been there from the moment we had laid eyes on each other. When we fucked it was hot, and real, and raw. There was something transcendent about it.

Could I deny that there were no emotional feelings? No. I couldn’t. I didn’t know when it had happened, but somehow this man had chipped away at parts of my protective barrier and I needed to find a way to reinforce what he had managed to expose.

“The doctor said you need to eat.” He gave me a deadpan look. “I will bring them in here to hook you up to a feeding tube if you don’t eat this damn granola, Savina.”

I grabbed the spoon from his hand and shoved the food in my mouth. I would be damned if he made me feel weaker than I already felt.

“Happy?” I spat out with food in my mouth to try and annoy him. But my actions seemed to have the opposite effect. The man smirked at me and nodded.

I silently ate my breakfast while he busied himself on his phone, likely going back and forth with Valerio on what they would do with the perpetrators.

He pocketed his phone and looked at me again. He moved from his seat beside the bed. Those blue eyes of his were laser-focused on my face. They peeled away every protective layer I had around myself like one would an onion.

“Don't stare at me while I eat. It’s rude,” I grumbled, spooning more granola into my mouth. I flicked my gaze to meet his momentarily before I turned my attention back to my food. “Take me to the interrogation.”

We stared at each other. The silence that passed between us increased in its intensity. The only thing that could be heard in the room was the steady beating of my heart.

“No.”

“You can’t say no. This concerns me more than it does you.”

He clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth in disapproval. “I’m your husband, and you are injured. There is no way in hell I’m taking you to an interrogation room with your skull still healing.”

He was acting like I was dying. The doctor had even cleared me to leave this wretched place within the coming days. I was fine, and I needed to get my revenge. No one got away with harming a Baratelli and lived to tell the tale.

I was about to open my mouth again to protest, when a knock interrupted my rebuttal. The door crept open, and a few short seconds later in walked my family.

“Are you okay, cara?” Dimitri walked in with a teary-eyed Martina in tow. I didn’t miss the way his eyes flicked to Andres and then back to me. It was only when he neared my bedside that I noticed the bruise on his nose.

“What happened?” I pointed to his nose. “Did you get hit?”

Everyone in the room fell silent. Martina averted her gaze, and Dimitri and Andres locked eyes. There was some form of silent communication going on between the two. It didn’t take a genius to understand what was going on. It was clear from the look of irritation and malice that shone on Andres’ face.

“You hit him?” I scrunched my nose in annoyance. “Why would you do that? I warned you to stay away from my family, asshole.”

“Bruja…” he started, but then Dimitri cleared his throat, making him stop.

“Cara…”

“Both of them were being dumb and stupid,” said Martina before anyone of them could speak up first. “They haven’t spoken since you’ve been in the hospital, and Andres has kept Papa away from you because he is upset about his lack of ability to protect you.”

I snapped my gaze back to the man accused. “Really?”

“You were bombed on his watch, Savina. Me keeping him away from you was kinder than what I had initially planned for him.” The coolness in his voice was enough to chill magma. “I refuse to take any more chances with your safety. From now on you will be guarded by my men and my men alone.”

“Well, I don’t trust your men,” I retorted. “And this was an ambush, Andres. No one could have seen it coming, and my uncle is not to be blamed for this.”

“Then who is?” he raised his voice ever so slightly.

“The people who set off the damn bomb, Andres! I’m not going to let you dictate my life like you own it.”

The heat in his eyes intensified with every word he spoke. “You were under his care both times assassination attempts were made on your life. You will not be protected by him anymore.”

“No.” The word ripped through the air, coated in my own irritations.

“You’re mine.”
