We got back to doing what we were doing. My mind had been running a little wild since that meeting with my father. I knew he was up to something, but whatever it was he had covered his tracks very well. I couldn't get anything on him.

“Do you still think that Dimitri had something to do with Antonio’s death?”

The question caught me off guard. I tore my gaze from the document and met my brother’s eyes.

“I don’t know.” I hated that I had no real solid answer to his question. “Dimitri is a soldier, and loyal to a fault. But if you bleed red, then there is a chance of you being corrupted. He was one of the few people who gained something from his death.”

My brother mused over my answer. ‘I don’t think so, brother. He’s still Savina’s second, and if he’d wanted, he would have pushed her out one way or another. I don’t think he’s a part of this, but I have a feeling he may know who is.”

That was also likely to be a possibility. However, I always lived by ‘guilty until proven innocent’, and right now Dimitri was teetering the line between friend and foe.

He was the closest thing Savina had left to a father, and if what I suspected was true then this would flip her entire world upside down. She trusted him, and for Savina, trust was everything in this world. I had no idea what kind of darkness would come over her once she found out.

“Wherever he stands doesn’t matter right now. We need to figure out what the hell Father is up to before he goes and does something incredibly stupid.”

My father had built this empire, but he had become too volatile as the years stacked on his life. I didn’t know if it was some kind of midlife crisis, but for the last three or so odd years he moved on pure emotion and rarely thought about what came next.

The ringing of my phone cut our conversation short. When I looked down at the contact I paused.

Why was he calling me?

I answered. “Dimitri, to what do I owe the pleasure?”

He was silent for some time. All I could hear were the low and silent breaths on the other side. My heart immediately jolted in my chest.

“Where is she?” She was the only thing on my mind right now. “What happened?”

“There was an accident.” Dimitri’s voice was chilling. “Savina… uh… she… she’s in surgery. She hit her head and…”

His voice drowned in the loud ringing in my ear. My mind moved at a million miles a minute as I tried to take in what he had just said.

Savina was hurt.

She had gone into surgery.

She hit her head.

I had spoken to her not even an hour ago over text. She had been scolding me for being overbearing and protective. She had called me a cunt and proceeded to leave me on read.

She was fine an hour ago.

What the hell had happened between then and now? How was she now suddenly in surgery when she was fine and yelling at me?

The room tilted on its axis and my entire equilibrium fell out of whack.

“Where?” That was all I could manage to ask.

He told me the name of the hospital they were at and I hung up. I surged from my chair, nearly knocking it to the floor.

Valerio’s features melted from amusement to concern. He stood from his seat, waiting for me to tell him what had happened.

“Savina.”

That was the only word I could utter. I met my brother’s cool eyes, communicating what I needed in that moment.

He nodded his head. “We take my car.”

I followed him out of my study and toward the basement parking. I had no full details on what had happened; all I knew was that she was unconscious and undergoing surgery.
