A letter had arrived at the estate two nights ago with my name on it. When I opened it, there was a clear warning and a little gift to go with it.

I’m back, Savina. Did you miss me?

It was him. The man who had killed my family and taken the light from my mother. He was back, and he was making it known. Uncle viewed it as a threat, but I viewed it as him mocking me. I had yet to catch him after nine long years.

“I’m not talking about that stupid letter.”

Martina and him both looked at me with equal parts sympathy and pride.

“Fine.” Dimitri rolled his shoulder. “But I’m going to up your security detail. We have to tighten up measures to make sure that you’re safe.”

“Let’s see what we’re working with.” I turned on my heel and headed toward the warehouse with Martina and Dimitri at my flanks.

I walked into the cold warehouse ready to do a personal inspection. But as soon as we stepped inside, I noticed all three of my guards laying on the floor with bullet holes in their torsos.

Shit.

Martina let out a blood-curdling scream and my uncle withdrew his gun. I grabbed my weapon from the back of my waistband and readied my weapon. My eyes darted all around the room, looking for the threat, but I could see nothing.

“Uncle.” I moved toward him and Martina as I continued to check our surroundings. If we made a mad dash outside, there could be people waiting for us with guns. We needed to be strategic about our next steps. “We need to get Martina out of here.”

She was my main concern. Unlike my uncle and I, she had no idea how to shoot a gun, let alone go hand to hand with someone. She was the easiest target out of the three of us, and I would be damned if I let them have her.

“I’m not a baby,” she hissed under her breath.

“I can smell the fear coming off of you in waves, Mar. Just let us get you out of here safely.”

“They are not even after me. They likely want—”

“Quiet!” Dimitri scolded us. “Is that…”

I tuned my ears to the environment around us, trying to see what I had missed. Then I heard it.

My eyes went wide. “Everyone out!”

I pushed Martina toward the door, Dimitri following closely behind. The beeping increased with the passing seconds, and just as I had made it past the door, the loudest explosion rang in my ears. The force of the blast knocked me to the ground, my head hitting the concrete hard enough to have my whole world turn black in a second.

Chapter Twenty-One

Andres’ POV

Valerio handed me a file with the names of all the people that Savina had executed concerning her father and brother’s murders. I skimmed through each one, making sure to read every single detail that we could find in them.

What was it that I was missing? There was no way Savina hadn’t found him yet. Not with the resources she had. Unless, of course, he wasn’t dead. But that was out of the question, because I didn’t believe it for one second.

“You are awfully invested in this, brother.” I didn’t care for his tone.

I flicked my gaze upward. “Is there something you want to say?”

One side of his lips tilted upward into a cocky smirk. “Do you perhaps care for your wife?”

I paused, and my entire body went rigid. “I care if she dies or not because that would mean war between the Italians and us.”

A coy smile pulled at his lips. “That’s not what I asked. Do you care about her?”

I set the document down and stared at my brother. I knew what he was trying to do, and I was not about to take the bait. “You came here to look for some kind of information, not to play therapist. If you can’t do what I assigned you to do, then get out.”

Valerio held up his hands in mock surrender. “I choose peace.”
