“Is this really a conversation you want to have standing outside of my car?”

With a giggle, she looked away briefly. “I mean… I’ve been wanting to talk to you about it since you took me to get tested.”

“We can talk. Get inside.”

While I drove, she sparked a blunt from my secret compartment. Before we could start the conversation, I got a call from Blaze.

“Is this business related, brother?” I asked since the call was connected to Bluetooth.

“Yeah.”

“I’m in the car, and I’m not alone.”

“Aight. We need to meet ASAP to discuss T.”

“Cool. Where you at now?”

“Out and about. You going to the shop tonight? I can meet you there.”

“Yeah. I got a client at seven.”

“I’ll be there a few minutes before that.”

“Aight, cool.”

As soon as I disconnected the call, Malaysia asked, “Are you a drug dealer?”

Chuckling, I ran my fingers down the corners of my mouth. “Is that a hard no for you?”

“Yes. Only because I don’t want to fall in love with someone that could go to jail at any time. I’m not that kind of ride or die. If you get locked up for twenty something years, I’m sending you them papers, no matter how much I love you.”

“I can respect that. I wouldn’t ask you to do that time with me anyway.” I looked over at her and made sure our eyes were connected as I told her, “No, I’m not a drug dealer. I smoke weed; I don’t sell it.” I paused and considered how much I wanted to tell her. “I do security and offer protection. He wants to meet to discuss one of my clients.”

“Oh. Okay.”

When that was all she said, I grew curious. “That’s all you have to say? You don’t have any questions?”

“Of course, but I figured if you wanted me to know more, you’d tell me.”

I liked that. “That’s true. What I can tell you is that I don’t do anything illegal for you to have to worry about. I offer defensive security, so if I ever take a life, it’s always justified.”

Her chest deflated as she released a sigh of relief. “Good. That’s really all I need to know. Oh! These jobs… do they take you away for weeks or months at a time?”

“Some of them can. It depends on the client. For instance, if it’s an athlete or politician, I may travel more. I’m freelance, so I get to choose who I work for. A lot of what I do now are jobs from Merc and Asylum, since they are navigating having new babies and shit. Most of their clients are here and in Rose Valley Hills.”

“Oh, I love The Hills. It’s so fun there. And the wealth and black opulence! I want to live there one day.”

“Good to know.” She gave me that beautiful smile. “I guess that’s a good time for us to talk about the whole baby thing.”

“I suppose so.”

“I don’t necessarily want a baby right now. I want you. I want to experience you and life with you. I would love to have a baby with you. Whether that happens in one month, one year, or ten, I’m cool with that. I’m cool with whatever and whoever comes with you. If you were to get pregnant now, I’m ready for the responsibility. To take care of you both. To make sure your life is better than it’s ever been. But I’m also willing to wait. I know things are moving fast between us, and you might need some time to trust that you’re safe with me and that I’d be a good life partner and father to your children, so I’m cool with that.”

We continued to talk about our childhoods and how we planned to raise our kids. Our expectations within marriage. She even told me about the list her pops had given her. She didn’t tell me what was on it, because she didn’t want me to be mindful of her watching me in those situations, and I could respect that.

I agreed with him that certain things and situations showed you versions of a person you wouldn’t otherwise see. I also agreed that love was a foundation for a healthy relationship but not the only requirement. We were on the same page about living life together and growing with one another, and right now, that was all I needed.

Malaysia was like a little puppy today, and the shit was cute as hell. She did not want to be away from me. I wasn’t sure if she even noticed it, but I wasn’t going to mention it, because I didn’t want her to shut down. When I offered to drop her off before I went to the shop, she declined. She was high and in a good mood, and I honestly didn’t mind her chilling at my spot while I created art. After she ate, I figured she’d fall asleep, so I told her she could chill in the lounge.
