“Good afternoon,” Thomas spoke, lifting his glass to his lips.

“What’s this about?” I asked.

“I need you to handle a problem for me.” With one bob of his head, one of his men handed me an envelope. I opened it and looked inside, not bothering to pull out the picture of a man with cursive writing on the back of it.

“Who is this?” I asked, handing Blaze the envelope.

“That’s Channing Odem. He’s been going around making plans of attack. He plans to rob me the night of my next casino themed party. My guests too. What do you plan to do about that?”

“I am a defensive guard,” I reminded him. “I don’t strike first. I only defend. My team and I can be there and make sure your party is a success. Should Channing show up, he will be handled. That’s all I can do.”

Our eyes remained locked for a while before Thomas chuckled with a shake of his head. “For what I pay you, I need you to be a bit more proactive.”

“From the sound of it, you want a hitman,” I clarified as I stood. “That’s not what I am. I told you what I could do. If that’s not good enough, we can end the contract, and you can find someone else. Otherwise, give me the details of the party along with any additional information you have on Channing, and I can guarantee you that you nor anyone at your party will be robbed or harmed.”

Without waiting for him to respond, Blaze and I left. As soon as we got outside, he said, “Man, that nigga is crazy as hell. He really out here tryna put prices on people head like he a mob boss or something. That money don’ went straight to his head.”

“Man, say. I don’t know what I was expecting him to say, but it wasn’t this.”

“How many people you thinking about having for the party?”

“I don’t know. It’ll depend on where he wants to have it. When he gives me more information on Channing, I’ll scope him out and pay him a visit as a warning. If he still decides to go forth with his plan, I’ll handle it how it needs to be handled. This is going to be it for me and Thomas, though. I need to get out this contract ASAP.”

We talked for a while longer before shaking hands and going our separate ways. I checked my phone before driving off, and the sight of a text from Malaysia surprised me.

Pretty Lil Baby: Can we talk?

I chuckled as I dialed her line, assuming she wanted to talk after seeing me at the party last night. We didn’t speak a word to each other. As difficult as it was to keep my distance, I did. If her man said the wrong thing, I was going to pop him in his fucking mouth.

“Hi,” she answered.

“You know a nigga now?”

She sighed, and I pictured her smiling through her frustration. “Aspen…”

“Because you acted like I was a stranger last night. You know me today?”

“Of course I know you. You’re hard to forget.”

That made me smile and almost forget how she ignored me last night.

Almost.

“Meet me at my shop.”

“Now?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay.”

After ending the call, I cut the Moneybagg Yo up that I was listening to and cruised through traffic to see my lady.

We were on opposite sides of my office. She was trying her hardest to keep distance between us. That made me feel good. That made me feel as if she was weakening. Being in my presence, my touch, it would make her crumble. I loved having that power.

“You look beautiful,” I told her because that was the truth.

Her hair was pulled up into a slick bun. She was dressed in a flowing pink maxi dress. Her chocolatey skin made me want to lick and kiss every inch of her body.
