“Be careful. Let me know if you see anything out of the ordinary.” I infused my cop tone into my words.

A slow smile spread over her face. “Oh, I will.”

I stood on the landing in front of her door, my brain misfiring as I took her in. “You always wear that lace top to answer the door?”

She looked down and then grinned. “I kind of forgot I was wearing it.” She tipped her head to the side, considering me. “Why, does it bother you?”

What could I say to that? It makes me hot?

She preferred honesty, but I couldn’t give it to her.

I shook my head, leaving before I pulled her against me, feeling her soft curves pressed against my hard ones.

The tinkle of her laugh followed me as I jogged down her stairs.

She was as complicated as the lace patterns on her shirt. Beautiful and sweet, intricate and detailed, covered and bare. Teasing with a hint of the promise of things to come. She was a temptation. One I’d give in to if I weren’t careful.

Chapter Five

REMI

Sitting at Max’s bar on Saturday for girls’ night, I swirled the sweet drink in my glass, still stuck on the expression I saw on Colton’s face while he was in the doorway. It was a mixture of shock and appreciation.

Without glancing down, I knew I’d forgotten to toss a shirt over my lace camisole before I invited him inside.

I was comfortable in my skin, and I knew how I looked. The lace was sexy as hell. It revealed just the right amount of skin while still appearing classy.

When his expression morphed into something that looked a lot like heat and desire, I made the conscious choice to tease him.

If he was going to show up at that time in the evening, he should have been prepared for whatever state of dress I was in. I wasn’t worried. Colton’s control was legendary, and if he decided to let it go for me, I wouldn’t stop him.

It was doubtful he’d lose it, even if I’d opened the door naked. I clenched my thighs together at that thought. I allowed myself to imagine him forgetting everything when I opened the door except touching me.

He’d stalk toward me, picking me up so my legs wrapped around his waist, duty belt and all. The stiff starch of his shirt abrading my nipples, and his uniform pants creating friction against my wet pussy.

I’d enjoy corrupting him.

When laughter rang out, I refocused on my friends: Hailey, Sophie, Brooke, and Zoe. Savannah was home with Ethan and her son, Miles.

It was too bad my sister had been with Colton first. Anytime I imagined something happening between us, guilt usually followed. Somehow, I didn’t think Delilah would appreciate me lusting after the guy who broke her heart in college, even though she never told me what happened between them. I was a senior in high school when they broke up, so it wasn’t on my radar. I was wrapped up in the fun of my last year of school, homecoming, cheerleading, and boys. Later, I heard Colton dropped out of college and enlisted in the military.

“How are things going with you?” Sophie asked.

“Things have been weird.” And I wasn’t just talking about the break-in. My reaction to Colton had knocked me off-center. I never anticipated his reaction to seeing me in a skimpy outfit. It was satisfying in one way, and not in another. I was still worked up.

“Because of the break-in?” She sipped her fruity drink through a tiny straw.

“That and Colton’s been around more.”

Sophie nodded. “He’s been checking in on me, too. Increased patrols. It’s nice.”

I narrowed my eyes, wanting to ask if he got to her like he did me. If his mere presence made her panties wet. If his sheer size and presence made her feel small and feminine.

When Colton had looked at me with need in his eyes, I felt desired.

Watching her closely, I said, “I wouldn’t call it nice. He’s bossy. Overprotective.”

“Did he tell you to put in an alarm system?” Zoe asked, amusement evident in her tone.
