“Nah. I’d be like ‘fuck that’ and go somewhere else.”

I got little a chance to worry about the status of Miller and me tonight, not until he walked into the diner at the end of my shift.

My heart was beating fiercely while I walked up to the booth he sat himself in, his usual one.

“Hi.” I say, awkwardly.

“Can you sit down?” he asks in a solemn tone.

“Yeah, just give me a minute. I have to close out my last table, and I’ll grab you water.”

I take a deep breath and a moment later; I slide into the booth, ready for him to come to the realization that we were a quick fling and that what we had was over.

“So, what’s up?” I ask.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for insinuating that you knew Becky. I’m sorry for approaching the whole situation this morning like a douche. Are you okay?”

“Um, yeah, I guess so. Are we okay?” My voice cracks.

His eyes soften, and he moves closer to me. He takes my hand and holds it.

“Are we okay? Of course we’re okay. How? Why? Wait, did you think I came here to end things? Fuck. No. I’m surprised that you aren’t breaking things off with me. I accused you of -. I flat out asked you if you knew-. Fuck! I hate how she’s pushed herself into my life, into our relationship, and spread herself over all this. I’m so sorry.” He hangs his head into his palms.

“I’m sorry you had any doubt. No. I’m sorry that she put doubt into your mind. About us, about your business. About anything. But we’re good. We can be good, right?”

“I’m good if you’re good.” He says, squeezing my hand.
