CHAPTER 18

Denise

I’m upset.

But I know his actions were coming from fear. I know he didn’t really think that I was conspiring with his ex. Right?

I should be hurt. Part of me was, but then I realized that this was bigger than just me.

I watch him walk across the street, straight up the car with the woman inside. He knocks on his window, and she shrinks, as if that action will make her disappear and for him to not be able to see her. He knocks again on the window, and she looks at him and acts shocked to see him. I think she rolls the window down and I see him gesturing with his hands.

I wish I could hear what was being said.

She steps out of the car and places her hand on his arm, that he shakes off with annoyance.

He takes three steps away from her and then stops as he pivots on his heel. He gets in her face. He says something, points at the building and walks away.

The look on her face is shock. As she stands there, with Miller walking away from her and getting in the back seat of his car. I observe her. She’s regally beautiful. She’s tall with long blonde hair. She looks pretty from this distance, but also like a bitch as she sneers and crosses her arms. She gets in her car and speeds away.

Well, whatever he said was effective.

Even though I need to get ready for work, a part of me wants to call Miller and see if everything is okay. But he has a lot on his plate.

I’ve somehow turned his life upside down just by dating him.

Is he realizing that as well?

Fuck. He and I will always be on a different footing.

I pour my now cold coffee down the sink and go get changed for work. At least I have the distraction of work.

There is a crowd in front of the diner when I arrive. I don’t pay any attention until I am in the thick of it. And then I realize that they’re there because of me. Because of Miller. And likely our relationship.

Phones are shoved in my face. My name is being called. I hear something with the name Ferguson. And Miller’s name. But I rush past them and inside s I hold my breath.

With my back against the front door, I look frantically around and see Monica refilling the ketchup bottles at the back counter. There is no one at any of the booths and the diner music is loud.

“What the hell is happening outside?” Monica asks me as soon as I walk over to her.

“I should ask you that. What in tarnation’s have you gotten mixed up with?”

“My guess is that this has to do with Miller.”

“Miller? The guy you’re seeing? Is he some famous person?”

“Not really. But he is the guy behind InterMind Technologies.”

“Shut your face.” She shakes her head. “Then what’s all these people doing outside here?”

“There’s some supposed scandal happening with his company and something about his ex-girlfriend.”

“That doesn’t explain why there is a swarm of reporters outside those doors.” Monica points.

“Miller is a very private person, and he was photographed with me. Since I don’t know when he was last seen with a woman, I assume that’s why.”

“I don’t think we’re going to get many customers today.”

“Or, we will get lookie-loos, who will think there’s someone special inside here, and come in.”
