CHAPTER 14

Denise

A loud knockwakes me up. I look at the wall clock and it’s after midnight.

I roll off the couch and look through the peephole and see Miller standing there, waiting for me to answer.

I open the door, and he looks relieved upon seeing me.

“I’m so sorry.”

“It’s the middle of the night. What happened?” I move out of the way and he walks past me. His hand reaches above me, and he closes the door. My back goes against the door, and he leans into me. His hand on my hip and his lips brushing against my cheek, then peppering to my lips.

“I’m so sorry. It’s been a horrible day, and an even worse night. But I’m here now.”

“Do you want something to drink?” I ask, stepping around him and walking into the kitchen area of my apartment.

“I think I’m already pretty drunk. Having anything more would probably give me the spins and I’m not ready for you to see that part of me, not yet at least.”

“You’re drunk?”

“A little.” He holds up his forefinger and thumb.

I shake my head. “Maybe some water or coffee.”

“Are you mad that I’m a little drunk?” he asks.

“No. I’m glad you’re here. C’mon, let’s go to bed.” I grab his arm and pull him toward the bedroom.

“Oh, I like it when you’re straight to the point.”

“Nope. We’re going to bed. I have class in the morning.”

“But baby, I want to play.”

“Baby?”

“You’re my baby, right? My girl? We made that official and shit. Yeah. And I want to play with you. Let’s go in the other room and fuck a little.”

I shake my head. He’s being ridiculous. And a part of me wants to give in. But the other part of me knows that I have to be up early and across the city in rush-hour traffic.

“You’re my girlfriend, right?” he asks, grabbing my hand and pulling me to the bedroom.

“Yes.”

“If we ever broke up, would you be the type of woman to go telling my secrets?”

“Is this in connection with the NDA I was given earlier?” I ask.

“No, actually.” He shakes his head.

“Not that I enjoy talking about the potential of us breaking up when we just got started, but I’m a firm believer of what happens between two people, stays between two people. I’ve been in a relationship or two and those relationships have stayed firmly in the past.”

“I could easily fall in love with you. I think that I kinda do already.”

“You’re drunk.” I laugh.

“And when we’re drunk, that’s when truths come out. Hit me. Ask me anything.”
