CHAPTER 12

Denise

My back isto the diner door, but I someone is staring at me.

I take a deep breath and put a smile on my face before turning around.

There’s a man in a fitted blue shirt. He has short blonde hair, a porn star mustache and glasses. He looks a little nervous as he looks at me with an envelope under his arm.

“Hi, how can I help you?” I ask.

“Are you Ms. Denise Watson?” he asks.

“I am. And you are?” I fold my arms over my chest.

“My name is Toby Matthews. I work for Mr. Davenport at InterMind Tech. I was asked to have you sign something.” He holds out his envelope.

“And what is this?” I ask, taking the envelope and opening the tab. I see the words: Non-Disclosure, and immediately look up, “is this something that Miller wants me to sign?”

“Ma’am, I’m only here to deliver this and have you sign.”

“Okay, thank you for stopping by. I’ll talk to Mr. Davenport and make sure that he gets this.”

“I was instructed to not leave without this document being signed,” he stammers.

“And who instructed you?” I ask.

Miller hasn’t said a word about me having to sign any paperwork. I know that we just made it official, but I would think that he would have warned me of having to sign something. And if he needed me to, why wasn’t that something that he asked me to do right away, when we first started hanging out?

Is this because of the stuff that came out on Page Six?

“I’m not at liberty to share that information.” He says.

“Considering that my boyfriend is the one who apparently employs you. I will speak directly with him and from there.”

“But-.” I hold my hand up and stop him.

“You’re at my work. I would implore you to let me get back to doing what I was doing, just as I’m sure that you need to do the same. Like I said, I’ll speak to my boyfriend about this.” I turn and walk through the swinging door that leads to the kitchen and the diner's office.

I pull my phone out of my purse at my locker and send a message to Miller.

Me: I was just paid a visit from someone at your work.

I see the three dots dancing on the screen. Then they stop before starting up again.

Miller: Weird. Who was it?

Me: Someone named Tobias. He has something that you need to have signed.

The three dots came again, then disappeared. They started dancing again, then they disappeared.

Miller: I didn’t send him. My HR department did. They didn’t tell me they were doing that.

Me: Do you want me to sign it? We haven’t talked about this before, so I took it from him and told him I would talk to you.

Miller: I think it’s something that we should just talk about instead. Can I see you tonight?

Me: Sure.
