“Oh no dear, you guys go along. It’s nothing that I can’t handle.”

“Mom,” I say in warning. “I don’t want you overdoing it.”

“While I may not be a spring chicken anymore, I know how to handle customers. Young man, you remember I used to manage little minds, just like you do. If I could hold down the classroom of thirty wild children, I’m pretty sure that I can handle some voracious readers.” She grins.

“Are you sure? I don’t want you to handle all the work.” Summer puts her hand on my mom’s arm.

“Are you kidding me? If I wasn’t here, I would sit on the couch doing absolutely nothing. At least here, I’m socializing, I’m moving around and not having my brain melted by television.”

I know better than to argue with my mom any further. She’s right, she can handle herself.

“Today was the day, right? How did everything go?” Mom looks at me expectantly.

“It went good. I think in our favor and all.” I nod.

“When will you know anything?” she asks.

“About a month.” I reply, wishing it was immediately.

“Well, I’m sure all will be good. I can’t wait to see Mason more. You deserve to see your baby boy as much as possible. You shouldn’t be punished just because the relationship with the mother didn’t work out.”

“Thanks, mom.” I reach for her and hug her as she squeezes me tight, I fight back tears.

“Now you two love birds go along and have a good night. If I run into a pickle, I promise to call you.”

Two hours later, mom texted.

She ran into a pickle.
